My weimaraner seems to have taken on the habits of my neo mastiffs. She used to run like the wind, constantly be going, hunting and sniffing. Now, even though she is maintaining her diet, she is lazy. The vet totally checked her out, and she gets 2 long walks/run a day. What gives? Cut the food more than I did? She already is on linited portions of a diet food, no bad treats...She went from hyper to "MASTIFF MODE" Help. |

how old is she? Older dogs...and with larger breeds that is fairly early sometimes...tend to slow down a bit. And the calm energy of the mastiffs probably does have some impact. Being overweight is going to slow her a bit too. So yeah, maybe cut her food more, so she starts losing, but don't let her lose too fast...2% of her body weight a month is as fast as is safe. You can supplement her food with green beans (don't use the canned ones, they have a lot of salt, but frozen work well) or unsweetened canned pumpkin to add some bulk to her diet without calories...and try to up the ante on exercise even more if you can. |

Is she drinking excessively? Has she been tested for diabetes? Other than limiting the food to portions suggested by the manufacturer of the food, which you're already doing, I dunno what to tell ya! Swimming is very good if you have access to water. It works a lot of the muscles of the body, and it's fun for you too! |

Your vet should be able to figure out how many kilocalories per day your dog needs, even in "mastiff mode". You may think about switching from light food to prescription diet food as well so you can feed more food and less calories. It sounds like she's getting plenty of exercise, but more is usually better (unless it's really hot out). You can also cut out all treats, and try carrots instead. Keeping her trim will help prevent arthritis and joint problems, not to mention costly surgical issues like a torn ACL. Good luck! |

You didn't say how old she is my experience with weimaraners is that older females often gain weight. Have her thyroid checked. It may be out of balance.
Make sure you are using a good quality pet food as she needs proteins not fillers.
Good luck. |
