Aside from using a remote collar (which I don't recommend) there are no other suggestions.
What you're doing is right. Ignore her and let her out when she's quiet and calm. My dogs had to be in the down position before they were allowed out. And even when I opened the door they had to wait till I have them a command to leave the kennel. You may want to try that. It's a little more control.
She's doing what she's been trained to do. "When I bark, they come, let me out, and I go for a walk"
When she barks - though early, and frustrating you must ignore her. Don't yell (it only encourages and reinforces the behavior because you're giving her attention). Just ignore.
Put her in sit and/or down before you open the door. Don't let her just run out. Give her a command to leave.
Good Luck |

You are definitely on the right track by not letting her out until she stops barking! It may be that she just can't wait any longer in the morning. You know how you wake up in the morning and the first thing you do is pee? It may be that she woke up an hour earlier and has been crossing her doggie legs hoping you'd wake up and let her out.
The fact that she barks just before she is to be let out to potty in the night tells you something about what needs to be done to resolve the problem. It seems that she has learned that she always gets to come out a while after she goes in and that is probably contributing to the barking problem in the middle of the night. This means her body is getting ready to pee and as the time gets closer she figures she'll throw in some barking to speed things up. (Our environments can trigger even such fundamental urges as urination! I used to have evening meetings and it got so that I always had to pee at 7:30pm... right about the time we usually took a break. For about 15 minutes before the break I was already feeling the sensations... on a schedule. Now that I don't have those meetings that 7:30 urge is gone.)
I would not crate her until you're going to be leaving her in for the night... don't put her in and then let her out in the middle of the night when you go to bed. Just leave her out until you're ready to go to bed so that she can learn that once she's in she's in for the night. Let her doze on a dog bed or next to you as you watch TV or whatever you're doing in the evening, but discontinue putting her in and letting her out later in the night.
If it's any consolation my dogs are older than yours and now they sometimes sleep until 9am! |

Maybe she is LONELY. I dunno why people buy puppies if they aren't going to baby them. Why put her in a crate when you ARE HOME?? I understand putting them in a crate for damage control during the time when you are not there, but to not sleep with your dog?? What kind of people don't sleep with their dogs?? |

Crate training?
We have a 12 week old puppy weimaraner. She is crated at night & has progressed (since 8 weeks old) from barking alot of the night to barking minimally.
She no longer barks when she is put in, but she does bark in the middle of the night (usually right before we are ready to let her out to go potty) & she barks in the morning (usually right before we are ready to get up & take her for a walk & feed her.) Its almost as if she has developed an internal clock, but its just a tad early. We've been ignoring her & not letting her out until she stops barking, but she still continues to bark at those times of the night. Any suggestions? |

I have two weimaraner's. I noticed that my two would eat really fast and gobble up their food too. If you want your weimeraner to slow down when they eat, try putting a tennis ball or a Kong in the bowl. What this does is causes them to eat around the toyto where they can't stick there entire mouth in there to get huge mouthfuls so it causes them only be able to get small amounts of food in their mouths. I personally recomend using one type of food. Dry food will keep their teeth more healthy. I feed mine two cups in the morning and two cups at night. |

Dry food. No wet food ever. Wet food is unhealthy, it ruins their teeth, and when the dog poops they can't express their anal glands because the poop is too soft. When a dog can't naturally express their anal glands, you or your vet has to do it. It's very, very stinky, too.
So, now that we've established dry food is best, what brand are you feeding? Not all dog foods are the same. The quality brands (Iams, Purina, Pedigree, Eukanuba) have more vitamins and nutrients and actually fill your dog up more. So, if you're not feeding a quality dog food, switch.
As for amount: The back of the dog food bag should have a guide. Usually they go by what your dog SHOULD weigh. So, check there and go by the guide. I would suggest 1.5 or 2 cups of kibble twice a day.
Vomiting? That doesn't sound good. There's no reason a dog should vomit unless something is wrong. In your case, it sounds like worms. Skinny, but eats food regularly. You should take her to the vet for a fecal check. If left untreated for too long, worms can really seriously start effecting the dogs health. |

Dogs will not starve themselves. I would stick with the dry food. It helps keep teeth healthy. maybe she isnt getting enough nutrition from her food. Research dog food ingredients. Its amazing what they are allowed to put in dog food. I have found Nutro max to be the best brand. its healthy, no byproducts and my girls have regular healthy stool from it.
As far as how much? It depends in weight and activity levels. Increase on days she gets lots of exercise, decrease on days she lays around the house (ha, funny weimies laying around?!?!)
If she is really not holding onto weight and its becoming serious, see the vet. |

As to the amount to feed her, follow the label directions. Dogs don't need the same amount of food for all brands - for example, if you're feeding a top quality food, your dog will eat less than if you're feeding one of the cheap ones.
She really shouldn't be eating canned food at all - there's not enough nutrition in it, and its not good for her teeth.
If she eats too fast and then throws up, try putting a really large rock - one that she can't possibly swallow, in her bowl. She'll have to slow down a bit to eat around the rock. You can also try feeding her smaller amounts and give them to her 3 times a day.
Has she been checked for worms? If not, you might want to do that as well. |

I feed my male weim a cup in the morning of dry food and a cup in the evening. I would stick to one or the other but I know how stubborn these dog can be. They also make dog bowls with the things in the middle to keep them from eating really fast try a pet store. **** Luck with your weim |

You usually see this dogs really fat or fit. But my wimaraner is like really skinny. We cant feed her alot because she gobbles up whatever we give her and she gets sick and throws up. I want to know how much should she be eating daily when it comes to cups of dryfood or cans of wetfood. And is it a bad idea to give dogs dryfood in the day and wetfood at night. They dont seem to eat the dryfood because i think they are waiting for their wetfood in the evening. Should we just stick to one or the other? |

They are great dogs and are usually very friendly and loving.
I suggest that you begin immediately training the new puppy for anything the little ones may throw the dog's way. I pulled on my labs ears and tail (gently) so that he would get used to kids wanting to touch his ears and tail. He is quite gentle with kids. If the kids like to run around this will be great, Weimaraners have a ton of energy.
One word of caution, sometimes this breed has separation anxiety, but due to the fact you have another dog the puppy may not display this at all.
Good luck and have fun with your new dog. |

Well I would not suggest a weim for you, they have so much energy that I can not even began to explain to you. Why don't you since it's your first dog adopt a dog? There are so many homeless dogs being put to sleep everyday, 1/4 dogs in shelters are purebreds and they need homes. It's also much cheaper to adopt because you have shots, spaying and neutering and microchip included. Most adoption fees are only $100.
I don't like those agility sets at all, if your interested in agility you need to take classes, it's so easy to train them wrong.
Royal canin is a low quality dog food, it's full of fat. I also don't like IAMS, science diet, eukunuba, beniful, purina, pedigree, or any other commerical dog food. I suggest Innova, cannidae, wellness, merrick, avoderm, or natural balance. |

Weimaraners are very unusual dogs. My ex had one that was an incredibly intelligent dog. They are very sensitive though and as adults seem to be very serious dogs. His decided from the start that she didn't like me and would sit in the armchair glaring at me the whole time I was there. Beautiful dog though, very smart, but I know she didn't like children very much. She tolerated his 7 year old niece, but would get annoyed and hide in a bedroom when she was over.
http://www.weimclubamerica.org/auntie/auntie2.html
There's a good FAQ page for you to look at. In other words, they can be great with the children they're raised with, but, don't take to kindly to having another one introduced. They also remember everything.
I'd say go with something a little more happy go lucky. Like a lab, just about any of the hounds, those kind of dogs. If you're looking for one that's nicely colored, look at photos of a Redbone Coonhound. |

Well weimeraners can twist their stomach after eating, seeing how you have children he might chase him which might get him too excited. I think the big dog would be too much to handle. Get like a medium size dog like a lab. Small dogs can't handle small kids and labs are active and can withstand little kids. Royal canin is fine. If your liveing in a place in a pool a lab would be wonderful there. |

Good for you for doing your research!
Weimaraners are extremely active, excitable dogs. It's good to start out with training early on, to help calm them down and keep them out of trouble.
They can just fine around children that are already steady on their feet. They are very friendly and only bite if trained to do so.
I know one weimie that is on Diamond brand food (which I've heard makes animals gassy) and one that is on purina large breed puppy. I would ask your vet if there's something specific that you should be feeding, they can often recommend brands.
Weimaraners need to have lots of exercise every day, and will get bored (and possibly destructive) if left to play alone. |
