I have two dogs, both of whom I love dearly. A black lab and a weimaraner. I've noticed that every time I groom or bathe the lab, and often just when I pet her, my arms get red and itchy. But that doesn't happen with the weimaraner. Also, if I'm playing with her and she scratches me, it swells and reddens a little, but goes down within a half hour or so. It seems odd that it would happen with a certain breed of dog, but not another. (Come to think of it, I've never had that problem with ANY dog in the past). She's bathed and groomed regularly, has no fleas, and is in good health - so I don't see how it can be anything else. I've had labs in the past who also didn't give me this problem - but we got her from a shelter, so I suppose that she may possibly be mixed with another breed (although she doesn't look like it). Is it the dog, or is there something I'm overlooking that could be causing this? Other than washing my hands, is there anything I can do to help it?

btw, I'm not getting rid of the dog - even if I AM allergic to her.

It is not that people are allergic to dogs it is normally allergic to the hair and skin that molts/ is shed. Maybe your Labs hair is longer than the Weimaraner which could be the reason, as different texture can make a difference, maybe she sheds more skin.

You could use disposable gloves when you groom her and even grooming her outside may help.

You could try giving her some additional oil in her diet, cod liver/ salmon oil.....and taking an over the counter hayfever tablet yourself.

Good on you about not giving up your dog!
