me and my partner have just bought a smallish 3 bed terrace house with an ok size garden and have decided its out of these 2 breeds we could manage a hour and half walk durin week and more at weekends, weimaraner was our first choice but me being only 5foot 2 my partner is worried i may struggle walkin a wei? also we want a dog that can be around other dogs hence why we started lookin at vizslas- can weimaraners be good with other dogs if socialised early- we want a dog we can trust of the lead!! thanks!!

I find it fascinating how many people feel the need to poll strangers-on-line to choose their dogs.
Do they need a majority cyber-vote to pick out their socks?

ALL dogs require TRAINING!!!!
NO dog comes "Instant Lassie"!
NO dog on planet can be turned loose w/out the real risk of disappearing over the horizon, getting smucked on the road &/or being picked up as stray & killed.
ESPECIALLY big-running BIRD DOGS!!!!!

Human height means SQUAT....having a spine & a brain does.

Hey,if you imagine that *this* is research........you will be SORRY!!! You're clueless & will ruin either breed.

I think you should pick whichever one matches your needs/requirements. Perhaps you could talk to breeders about your questions and concerns, as they will be most knowledgeable. A good breeder is most interested in seeing their dogs in the best possible homes, not in making a sale, so they should be very willing to help you decide if you are a good match or not.

I would say a Vizsla because Wei are hard to controll because they are so entergetic and they like to run alot. Vizsla are a good breed they do well with people and can be trained fairly easisly.

I have experience with both, as well as german shorthaired pointers. All three breeds are very high energy dogs and require A LOT of exercise. I have never had a problem introducing ANY dog to other dogs, if you do it in the right situation. I work for a dog breeder, and also volunteer for a german shorthaired pointer rescue group. Weimaraners and vizslas are very close in size so if you think you will have trouble walking one of them, chances are you'll have trouble with the other. Have you checked with any dog rescues? Rescue dogs are generally dogs (not puppies) who are socialized within their foster homes with other dogs. Most are housebroken, crate trained, and lead trained.

Maybe a smaller dog would be better for you? I would research a little bit more on actual dog websites, and not Yahoo answers, since a lot of people give incorrect information.

good luck!

Personally, I'd get neither. both have a history of terrible diseases, if you can get a cross breed it would be much better.

I have a weimaraner and there's no way she could live on and hour n half walk a day! She has an hour walk in the morning, and hour walk in the afternoon and half hour walk at night. They're very demanding dogs and want a huge amount of attention. My Wei is fine with other dogs and also very easy to walk - no probelm with my height. (I'm 5 foot).

However, i think if you can only walk a dog that amount each day you shouldn't even consider getting one. They demand so much care - you can't leave them alone all day! I'd seriously think about getting a different animal.

As long as you properly socialise your dog and obedience train it then you shouldn't have any problems with either breed.

The size of the person on the other end of the lead won't make any difference with a well behaved dog. I am small and two of my dogs weigh the same or a little more than I do. They are obedience trained to advanced level and easy to manage.

Both breeds require a ton of exercise or they will go crazy. Your size doesn't have anything to do with it, but training does. Trusting *off lead* goes with extensive training. Females are smaller in both breeds if you are really worried about size. In all honesty, I don't think either of these breeds sound right for you. As for being good with other dogs, almost all dogs can be good with each other with proper socialization and supervision, but both *tend* to have male to male aggression.

you shouldn get a dog at all, if thats all the time you have to walk it, especially not a wei, they have so much energy, they need that a day not a week

Weimaraners are great dogs but honestly I wouldn't recommend either of the two for a first time dog owner, as both are high energy, high demanding dogs.

A Hungarian Vizsla is probably the most easiest of the two to care for. They're easier to train, great with other dogs, love children, gentle, playful and friendly dogs.
Weimaraners are very high energy dogs, that can, if not trained properly, become dominating of the owner and so for that reason need a firm experienced owner. My dogs have to Weim friends that they love to run and play with and both Weimaraners are off lead and so yes with the right training they are great dogs, full of life.
However neither of them do well left alone and are prone to suffer with separation anxiety if left for long periods of time. They need at least 90 minutes exercise a day with off lead playing, and need a lot of training, and stimulation.

Don't let this put you off, as if you are prepared to put in the time, effort and commitment to research each breed, contact and visit breeders, then put in a lot of time and patience to train the dog, you will be rewarded with a great dog.
