I have a 7 month old weimaraner puppy that is full of energy. I just can not believe the 5 minute a month rule for this breed. If I walked him 35 minutes on a leash he would bounce off the walls. I take him out for 30 minutes everyday and let him run in the forest off leash and once a week I take him out on a hike (off leash as well) for a couple of hours (I am not running just walking). Do you think this is too much? It is not like we force him to do it and I think he has built up to this but what is your opinion? He loves it and after a quick nap its like a brand new day.

The fact that he's off-leash makes it much better. The idea is to not do any *forced* exercise, meaning running or walking (or continuous jumping) without a break. A puppy will naturally rest when it gets tired -- unless it is on a leash, or desperately trying to keep up with it's master. Just as a precaution you can stop for breaks every so often while you're out on your hikes, and see if he takes those opportunities to lie down and rest. If so, he probably needed it. If not, keep on going.

I have a weimaraner! She is an amazing dog. She was crazy when she was a puppy and still is, but she definitely got a lot more than 35 minutes of exercise and she is perfectly fine now. I would continue doing what he feels like doing and if he begins to act tired (more than a short nap) I would cut back. I think some of it has to do with their joint development but I'm not sure. Five minute a month rule? I think that might be for leash walking the dog---not letting it run and play.

Let the dog run on grass or a soft surface to its heart's content. Don't run/jog him on pavement or leash walk him excessively or compel him to walk a long way.

I think you are doing fine. I believe your dog would display signs of tiredness if it were too much. I think most people do not give their dogs enough exercise. Keep in mind that wolves move all day long to find food & shelter.

If he loves it and you do - then I don't think it's a bad thing.
