Ha! That's so weird, I have an 8 mont old weimaraner too! I started walking him from the day I brought him home and tried to make it obvious that I wanted him walking next to me. But, as he's gotten older and bigger, I've noticed he does pull on his lead. I finally broke down and bought a choke chain. He barely notices it, and when he starts to pull, I just "pop" it with a little jerk. He seems to get the message at least for a little while. He never pulls really hard, but I don't want him to get into the habit. Also, if he just can't seem to stop himself, I stop walking and tell him to sit. After awhile, he gets sick of stopping and actually hangs back a bit. A friend of mine suggested changing directions every time they tug. They get to the point where they want to be ready in case you change again, and they stay closer to your side. Go the opposite direction of where she wants to go. You have to remind her that you are in charge here. Seems like if I run him a bit before the actual walk, that kind of takes the edge of the energy. Like throw the ball in the backyard or something. They are so energetic, it's up to us to help him focus that energy. Every once in awhile, I reinforce my alpha status by holding him on the ground. He expects it now and doesn't even try to struggle. I think that would help let your dog know that you are the leader. Good Luck! |
