I have a 3 year old weimaraner. I have done a bit of research on the breed and found that they are very prone to bloat. Because of this I try to do my best to make sure he eats 2 or 3 meals a day instead of 1 large meal. I am still concerned. Lately, I feel like his stomach looks big. He is very skinny so this is easy for me to tell. I don't know if I should take him to the vet or just wait a little while and hope it goes away. I don't have several hundred dollars to pay for a vet visit right now unless it is absolutely necessary. Any suggestions will help, especially if you have dealt with this before. Thanks in advance. I just want my baby to be okay! |

If you even suspect for a second that you dog has Bloat, then you need to get off the computer and get him to a vet fast. Bloat will kill your dog in a heartbeat, if it's not caught and treated immediately. If you want your baby to be okay, then take him to the vet now, before you end up losing him. Even if it's not Bloat, it could be something else that is serious. It's not normal for his stomach to be enlarged! |

Definitely take him in. The vet probably just needs a quick glance to make sure it's not bloat. If it is, however, you want to find out quickly, so that he's suffering as little as possible.
You can encourage him to eat more slowly by getting bowls that have little upwellings in them. He has to eat around them and can't get to the food as quickly to wolf it down. |

Could he have worms? I know sometimes the round bellies could mean that the dog has worm infestation. Look in his stools for roundworms, or egg parts. |

When you say his stomach looks big, does it look swollen or just like he has gained weight? Why not look online and see if there are any pictures of dogs who actually have bloat and compare.Has the dog been this way for awhile? If so it is probably not bloat but weight gain from the 2-3 meals a day.Vets are expensive, but if you are convinced it is bloat take him in.Hope he is ok.GOD-bless |

You should always take you pet to the vet when you think something is wrong. but if you are not shure call the vets office and ask. they can tell you if he needs treated right away or not but also you might be able to find gas drops at a local pet store to help. good luck! |

Many dogs built like Weimaraners with the deep chest and narrow waist are prone to bloat.
But, it could also be a case of worms. If the big belly came on suddenly, then it's off to the vet ASAP since this would be an emergency. However, if you've noticed it to be coming on gradually, it could be worms or a poor quality dog good.
It's good that you feed him smaller meals twice a day, but whether it's bloat or a bad case of worms, he needs a vet. |

Bloat is not something that happens slowly. It happens very suddenly & without any warning. & it must be treated immediately. That's not what's going on here but if you have a skinny dog with a big belly that still sounds like something your vet should check out.
Good for you for staying infoemed about the breed you own! |

What do you mean by lately his stomach looks big? Do you mean just today or for awhile? Bloat is something that will happen quickly and will have other signs than just a bloated stomach, like the dog will act uncomfortable and painful, hunch over and act lethargic. Often, they will try to vomit but not be able to. If not treated almost immediately, it is fatal.
The best thing to do is to call a vet and explain what's going and they can tell you if it's a good idea to bring him in or not. |

When you say *lately*, what do you mean? One hour, 1 day, 1 week, how long? If it were bloat, the dog wouldn't even be alive it is were for a few days. Also, you would be able to see some symptoms of discomfort, such as being hunched up, shaking, not wanting to move, etc. If this is something that just started, say 1/2 hour ago, I would get to the Vet NOW. If this is something that has been going on for days, it sure is heck is NOT bloat, but sure could be something else. |

my weim died of bloat, he was checked by my vet just 1 hour before. the only thing i can say is that he was very quiet (even at the vets i remarked how quiet he was) vet checked him over and said he was doing really well. within the hour he started yelping and twisting around. rushed him to emergency vets and it was bloat, had to have him put to sleep there and then, (he was only 20 months old). It is a real kitchen table operation that needs immediate attention. trouble is once this has happened once it can happen again and is a very costly operation.(please make sure you are insured). always feed your weim 2 hours before exercise and try to make sure he doesnt bolt his food. |
