Hello, my wife and I want to get a dog. Right now we are undecided between a lab, boxer or weimaraner.

Which dog would be safer (gentle) for our 3 year old, and 6 month old? Or, is there another breed I might consider?

thanks

Your kids are awfully young to be bringing a puppy into the home. You'll really have to impress a breeder or rescue group to get them to allow it.

Being friendly with kids depends on the quality of the breeding, the amount of socialization, the amount of training, and your kids.

Training your kids is just as important as training the dog.

All 3 of these breeds are highly active large dogs. The lab, from a good breeder or rescue group, will be the easiest to handle.

If the highest priority is friendliness with kids, then rescuing an adult dog is actually your safest bet. Loads of familes are giving up their dogs right now. You can finds tons of well trained, family ready dogs at http://www.petfinder.com

If you are set on a puppy, use http://www.pbrc.net/breeding3.html to learn how to avoid ending up with an insane and sickly dog.

A lot of kids are mean to animals when they are mad, because they think since the animals are smaller than them, they get to pick on them. I'm not saying that it will automatically make your kids mean to them, but dogs will snap if the kids get overly mean or they are hurting them.

I have a jack russel/ carin terrier mix, and he is fantastic with our kids. But he will do a warning snap if they are hurting him.

I also have an Akita Shepard mix, when the kids are running around or being hyper or are near him and he feels threatened, he goes upstairs or in to the other room.

I recently got a pitt/shep mix and she thinks the new born (well, 2 month old now), is her baby that she shares with me and the other adults. But if the older kids are running around and run at the baby, the dog will jump up and push them over or try to push them away from the baby. Which i acually appreciate because the kids know not to run around in the house, and especially around the baby.

I recently rehomed my Australian Shepard, he was the best dog. He loved it when kids gave him attention, when my son was 9-13 months old, he would crawl over, pet him, pat him, move his skin around and mess with his face and even lay on him as a pillow, and our Australian Shepard didn't mind and loved the attention and was very gentle with him.
But when the older kiddos would hit him or run in to him, he would just move to a different spot. He acually slept on the end of my 2 1/2 year olds bed.

I also once had a pitt bull, full breed. Got her when she was a puppy and trained her. Her name was Foo-Foo, so you can pretty much see her personality with the name. She loved to lick the kids faces and be around them and follow them. She would cuddle up to them and she was the sweetest thing. But since she didn't know how big she was, she would sometimes knock the kids over, but she didnt mean it. One time my mom got on to her about something she did, and Foo Foo ran behind the couch and cried. The only dog i had cry was my pitt bull! and only cause my mom yelled at her, she didn't hit her or anything. She cried for a few hours. Poor baby.

But not all breeds are the same, not all dogs are the same, just like not all humans are. You can't make the statement, all 6'2 white men who like apple pie are horrible dads (random statment).

but I do reccomend a jack russel or australian shepard. Those are usually the best around kids and people.

Be sure to also have a talk with your three year old about how to be around a dog, that dogs are people too, they feel things too, even if they can't run to mom and tattle on you, they still have feelings. Especially Foo foo, my pitt bull.

Do you know what you will be getting yourself into? All of those breeds are very energetic and require at least 2 hours of vigorous exercise every day.

I really wouldn't get a dog when your kids are this young. Any dog is going to be a lot of added work, stress, mess and money.

Picture it....your youngest child has learned to crawl and notices a brown pile...he crawls over to feel and investigate it. Or the dog chews and destroys your 3 year old's favorite toy or your favorite piece of furniture. Your house is smelling like urine and are embarrassed to have anyone over because the new puppy has had accidents. You find mysterious wet spots with your socks. You can't stand the fact that the dog sheds a lot and you find hair all over the place.

Dogs are A LOT of work and responsibility.

Lets say if you get a lab, most ppl say there friendly but some aren't. all dogs r different! Lets say that someone has a maltese and its really friendly, you get one and its horrible, I suggest when your going to a pet store or watever you should watch a dog,see wat it does ask the person who works their if its nice and friendly.'
But I think your kids r too young to get a dog

My German shepherd has been the best with my kids. The best thing to do is find a good breeder, see the parent dogs and how they act, then make sure the puppy is with the kids a lot.GOD-bless

They are all good with kids, but they are also all highly energetic breeds that will need plenty of exercise. Something to consider if your family prefers a sedentary lifestyle.

NO BREED OF DOG IS RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN THIS YOUNG. NO RESPONSIBLE BREEDER/POUND/SHELTER WOULD GIVE YOU A DOG WITH KIDS THIS SMALL. EVERY BREED OF DOG HAS TEETH AND THEY BITE KIDS AND JUMP ON KIDS. KIDS ARE THE NUMBER ONE STRESSOR OF DOGS. DOGS DO NOT KNOW NOT TO BITE OR JUMP ON KIDS AND KIDS DO NOT KNOW HOW TO BE NICE TO DOGS. KIDS WILL BOTHER DOGS WHEN THEY ARE EATING, OR TAKE THEIR TOYS, AND THEN WHEN THE DOG ACTS LIKE A DOG, THE PARENTS BLAME THE DOG. IT IS JUST TOO CRUEL TO THE KIDS AND THE SACRED DOG. SOME SMALL CHILDREN HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO HUG A SMALL DOG AND KILL IT. PLEASE DON'T GET A DOG UNTIL YOUR YOUNGEST CHILD IS 6-YEARS-OLD, IT IS JUST TO CRUEL.

I have kids aged 15, 12 & 11 at home and grandkids aged 8,3 & 2 who visit regulary. My weim is great with them. The biggest question you need to ask yourself in my opinion is have you the time to exercise a dog for about 2 hrs a day everyday regardless of the weather.
