Well, a dog called a wimerauner bit my 10 year old! She was going door to door for a fundraiser and as soon as the guy opened the door, the dog jumped at her and bit her on her jaw and on her elbow. They should have restrained the dog. Now she has a scar on her jaw although she is still a happy child but jumpy when she sees a dog. If she had not moved her chin to her chest, he would have bitten her neck as that is what he was going for. He literally tried to kill her and we are very lucky that it didn't happen. So I am finding out that dogs bit people very often. Why is it that we think that dogs are man's best friend but their natural instincts come back at any given moment and can attack. What is your dog bite story?

I'm very sorry your daughter had this experience. I hope she's able to get past her fear of dogs in the future. As awful as this is, I have to disagree when you say that dogs bite people very often. There are millions of dogs kept as pets in the US, the majority will never bite anyone. I don't know exact statistic numbers off the top of my head of course, but I'd be willing to bet the # is probably down somewhere around 5% or less. And those that do bite, I don't think it's a matter of their natural instincts coming back without reason & they just go crazy. Dogs that bite are either not properly cared for (proper training is part of proper care imo), who have been trained to attack, or those that are ill or injured. I once took a dog to a vet, after watching a car in front of me hit the dog & leave it. That dog did try to bite me. The dog also had massive internal bleeding, and was probably in terrible pain. The dog that bit your daughter probably has a "thing" about people coming to the door. Maybe the owners don't get a lot of company, and the dog gets nervous when it hears someone at the door. I'd bet my last dollar the owners have seen the dog 'spaz-out' at the door before this day. And long before the dog bit your daughter they should have done some research or hired a trainer to work with the dog to get him over this fear. It's irresponsible to know your dog doesn't handle certain situations well and not work to correct that. Again, I am very sorry that your daughter was bit by this dog.

actually animal control noticed that the dog was very volatile when people come. It's overly protective. They had an electric fence. But you know what? The worst thing would have been if she had walked across the yard to the front door and the dog attacked her. It could have been a lot worse. The owner lives in a very big home (mansion). Seriously. He's a doctor. So they have to at least put a beware of dog or dangerous dog sign in their yard as the dog could do it to anyone. And my daughter is not the type to tease a dog. She would be more apt to pet it but she didn't do that either as he just jumped her when the door was opened.

it's really bad that that happened. dogs aren't really in the habit of just attacking for no reason. in the case of that particular dog, it was obviously being territorial, and the owner must have known it was inclined to jump up at people at the door. it should have been shut in another room as he answered the door or at the very least held securely. as I say, there's always a reason they bite. one of our rescue dogs is very snappy if he wakes suddenly, he's a jumpy sleeper. when he's sleeping we make sure we talk to him and he's awake if we are approaching him. we know this, so we make sure it doesn't happen. he's a lovely lovely natured dog, but this snapping on waking once got me on the face. I never blamed him as if he'd been trying to bite me there would have been a lot more damage. as it is I have a few small scars between my eyes. he got told off, and was very guilty for a long time. that's not the same as actually going for someone, he just jumps up snapping when he's startled in his sleep. we make sure we are careful when he's sleeping, because he's not actually trying to bite at the time. I mean, my partner has night terrors, and his woken up flailing his arms and hit me round the face by accident before. I didn't get rid of him for that, and with my dog, it's the same thing. dogs aren't naturally agressive or biters. it just happens under some circumstances, and the owners should be more aware.

I agree. I like to exercise and sometimes there are dogs that will lie in wait for someone to come by on a bike, or jogging, or even cars and they like to chase them. Sometimes it's purely out of boredom. I don't really blame the dog as much as the owner because they should be more responsible for their dog and it's behavior. Especially in the country. Many people in the countryside just let their dogs run at will and you get these bored dogs that like to chase people or vehicles. In this case, I think the owner should have held his dog while he answered the door, or at least moved him/her to another room.

I'd say there was probably a chance that the dog was once abused/teased by a child, and when he saw your daughter, he thought she was going to do the same. It's not like a Weimaraner to do that at all. I've worked with many Weims (and I own one), and all of the ones I've met have been more prone to try to get away than to attack- attacking is always the last resort. Please don't judge the Weimaraner breed for this though. My boy will literally allow anyone to walk into my house- he just searches them for food and walks away (he's a food-a-holic). He's never met anyone he didn't like- and he was a year and a half old when I adopted him from the shelter- so who knows what happened to him before I got him.

Very sorry to hear about your daughter! I know what your going through... When my son was 7 (now 13) he spent the night at a friends house. The next morning they were outside playing. My son was chasing the other boy around the car. All of a sudden there dog attacked my son and bit into the left side of his face from forehead to mouth area. His claw put a really deep scratch in his shoulder. The mother brought him home with an ice pack on his cheek. I thought the boys had gotten into a fight. Then she told me what happened and said that it wasn't too bad. Too bad, my a$$! I rushed him to his Dr. whom referred us to a specialist. The dog didn't rip any of the skin off, but did clamp down to where my son had to be put under to have over 50 internal stitches to repair the inside of his face and then over 50 micro sized stitches on the outside of his face. We spent all day in the hospital. We made a police report, which didn't do much good cause they lived in the county and there are no dog laws in the county here. Dogs can run free, don't have to have there rabies shots, etc...which this dog was not up to date on his shots. Therefore we had to keep a close eye on our son for possible rabies. They did confine the dog to there property for 10 days, but that was it. I am not a mean and cruel person to go out and sue people, but this family not once called to check on our son! When we were asking questions, about shots and that sort of stuff they hesitated with answers. He was scared to go to school because the kids would make fun of him, so I went to the school ahead of time and had the teacher talk to the class. Luckily no kids made fun of him! He wasn't able to eat except for very soft foods, like baby food, jello, puddings for a good 2 weeks. The whole left side of his face was swollen. He was on pain medication for several weeks. It appears a nerve was damaged because still to this day he twitches on that side every so often. But he made it through all of it! We hired an attorney because the hospital, surgery, Dr. bills were over $3000 and of course the family did not offer to pay for what there dog did. The attorney was no help at all! We ended up losing our case. Come to find out when I went to get the police report they had another incident with this dog a couple years before ours. That incident was with there own nephew. The dog literally ripped his ear off. A 3 yr. old child! He had to have reconstructive surgery to have his ear fixed. My son is not scared of dogs like I thought he would be, but he is more careful around them. I don't think all dogs are mean and try to bite people. I think it has alot to do with how they are treated and raised. People think rottweilers are mean dogs that attack people for no reason. I disagree on that because we have one and have raised and breeded many! More and likely this dog was teased or mistreated and your daughter happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time which was very unfortunate for her. I am sure she will start to like dogs again, may take some time and she will be very cautious when approached by one. I hope the people that owned the dog help you out with the medical expenses unlike what we had to go through!

My first husband always wanted to get a Chow, but I wouldn't have one around the children. Well....after we divorced and he remarried, he and his wife got one. It wasn't long before she was nipping and growling at everyone, and I told him that it was just a matter of time before someone got hurt. Unfortunately, I was right. One weekend, while my children were visiting him, my son was sitting on the living room floor, watching television and petting the dog. For no apparent reason, the dog jumped on him and knocked him down, biting him. He had to have eleven stitches in his eyebrow, and three more in his ear.
