I have a blue female weimaraner thet is almost 6 years old. Most of her life shes eaten Nutro dog food which is pricey. But we switched food about 4 month ago, she likes the new food alot and i let my dad feed her for a few weeks and it turns out he had been feeding her 2 cups 2 times a day. Ever since then shes had a little chub in between her front legs. I hate the fat so i run her mostly every day and give her 11/2 cups of food twice a day. her frame is pretty small and iam pretty sure she weighs about 70 pounds. I feed her merricks dog food, I rotate the flavors every feeding and the flavors are wilderness blend, turducken, and cowboy cookout. its pricey food, not sold in pet stores. Anything i should do different? |

No, I think you're doing things right. Merrick is a good food. It may take a bit to lose the extra weight--at six years old she's not a young dog, anymore.
If she doesn't appear to have lost the weight by this time next month, you might try knocking a quarter or half cup off the daily total.
Also, if you are giving her treats, it's a good idea to subtract a little bit from the daily food to compensate.
Btw, Weims have a tendency to get a bit barrel-shaped as they get older. |

I think you cut down on her food by the right amount, so that's good. Feeding her twice a day is great.
Combined with lots of exercise every day - walking, running, playing ball or frisbee if she enjoys that, and she'll take the weight off in a healthy way. I don't think you need to do anything different - just make sure she's getting plenty of exercise daily. |

I only feed my weims 1 cup twice a day. Plus half a can of green beans on occasion. They are all in tip top shape. All healthy, in fact the male i have has lost weight he was around 80 some pounds and he should be around 60 something, a female should weight about 50 something so she needs to lose weight.
Weims have a tendency to want to over eat so green beans are perfect cause they fill them up quickly so they are not hungry after they eat. |

How much your adult dog eats depends on his size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. Dogs are individuals, just like people, and they don't all need the same amount of food.
Keep your Weimaraner svelte by measuring his food and feeding him twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time.

Just keep feeding her the correct amount of Merrick and getting that exercise!
Merrick is far better than Nutro and I'm glad you are willing to feed it. |

You should always measure the food you feed, rather than guessing. Treats are another MAJOR form of extra calories, you should try to curb. I suggest trying raw carrot sticks instead of biscuits/treats. Petco also sells a very nice freeze-dried liver (which can also be very healthy for the dog, as well as low in calories.)
Most females weigh an avg 60-65 lb, so she may be a little over. What's her height at the shoulder blades? (Range is 23" to 25" for bitches.) Merricks is okay. Are you feeding kibble/ canned or both? She may appreciate/like your adding some formerly frozen, green beans or chopped spinach to help make her feel full (w/o the calories). |
