Subject :Is it unhealthy to feed my Yorkie Large Breed Puppy food?..

I have an 8 month old Weimaraner and 1 yr old Yorkie. They are CONSTANTLY eating each other's food no matter what I try (feeding them in different bowls, different times, etc.) I bought the Yorkie Avoderm Adult dog food and the Weim Avoderm Large Breed puppy food. They both eat the other's food as well as their own.
Is it unhealthy for my dogs to do this? Also, if it is, would it be better if I buy some type of All Life Stage food? Thanks. |

I would suggest you mix the food together, that way both dogs are getting what they need, or feed the dogs in separate areas. Nothing to worry about. |

A one year old dog doesn't need puppy food but neither does the Weim. Puppy food is too high in protein and makes the dog grow too fast causing joint problems later on.
You can feed them both the same food, but the Yorkie might prefer a smaller kibble.
You need to take both dogs to obedience training. There is no reason that you should not be able to tell the dog to eat his own food and feed them in the same room. Someone needs to be boss and it had better be you. |

I don't imagine it'd be harmful but I'd check with a vet just in case. In most brands, the only difference in large breed formula is that it contains glucosamine and chondroitin. These nutrients help strengthen bones and joints to prevent the onset of arthritis and hip dysplacea. I really don't see where that would cause problems with the smaller dog, but like I said check with a vet just to be safe. Maybe you could try feeding one dog inside and the other outside. |

The dog foods offer different nutrients and such for each specific dog. Its probably not the best thing to let them eat the food that isn't for them. What you need to do is simply feed them in separate rooms. When they are done eating, remove the bowls until the next feeding. I can't imagine how they'd be able to eat each others food if you do it that way. |

Yes. Large dog food contains more vitamins and supplies that smaller dogs do not need. It is unhealthy for an overdose of this. Do not feed your yorkie large dog food, and change back to the smaller food. I suggest Wellness, Natural Balance, etc. And also, I suggest feeding them in different rooms. Keep them separated. |

Separating the Weim during feeding should be fairly easy since it won't take much time to consume the meal. If you let your Yorkie graze like I do, try putting a cat door in a bathroom or other door that is kept shut and keep the Yorkie's food and water in that area. |

Just feed the adult formula.
Skip large and small breed scams. Just feed adult food formulas. |

Dogs should never have access to each other's bowls anyway - but yes, of course it makes a difference.
They should each be crated when they are given their meals. They can come out when they are done. Problem solved. |

Different size dog breeds need different amounts and certain vitamins, minerals, etc. Try feeding them in different rooms or about a 5 minute difference in time. |

Feed them separate food, feed them in different rooms if you have to, then when they are done pick up their bowls. |

Can you try feeding them separately? You need to give them something that it meant for there eating types. |

yes they have little bones and different structure than big dogs.. there own food gives them the nutrients that they need. |
