I have an 8 mo. old Weimaraner and a year old Yorkie. I have to feed both of them the same food b/c they eat at the same time and eat from each other's bowls. Is it OK to start feeding both of them Avoderm Chicken Meal and Rice for Adults?
BTW, we have a vet appointment next week where I am planning to ask but just want to know now. |

The Yorkie should be on adult food now, the Weimaraner, until at least 18 months. With medium to large size dogs, 18-24 months is optimal, you can judge a good time to change by your dog's physical condition...I kept my English Setter on puppy food until age 2, because he was very underweight (too much activity, not enough interest in eating). For GIANT breed dogs, which yours is not, it is often recommended to avoid puppy food after the first few months, but this 'rule of thumb' does not apply to Weimaraners...they don't have the bone development problems of the heavy, giant breeds. |

Because a weimeraner is a large breed dog, it's probably best to continue to feed a large breed puppy formula until 1 year of age. Their bones grow at a different rate than a smaller dog, and their diet requirements differ a lot from a small dog like a yorkie. |

As far as your Weimaraner goes he still needs puppy food for growth and development.
I keep my gang on puppy food till between 1 and 1 and a half years of age. I want to always know that their growth plates are closed before going to adult formula`s
Good Luck and God Bless |

I think the weim would need the puppy food because its still growing. My weim hope grew until she was about 1 then the second year she filled out a little. Remember that puppy food has more nutritional value for puppies and your weim is still considered one. Good Luck. |

Check the box that your food is from. Or just call any vet and ask. The norm is usually 1 year. |

I don't approve of puppy food past 8 weeks. It's too high in protein and encrouages too rapid growth which is hard on joints and bones. |
