I was wondering if anyone who is currently feeding their dog Innova EVO if you noticed an increase in water intake and more frequent urination in your dog once you started feeding. And if you did, did it taper off and return to normal over time once the dog became adjusted to the food?
The reason I'm asking is because a friend switched her 13 year old Weimaraner over to EVO and noticed that he was drinking an awful lot of water to the point where he had an accident in the house, of course she thought it was due to the higher sodium content than his old food [almost double]. NaturaPets stated that this was normal due to the high meat content and that the increased water consumption would stop once his body adjusted to the food. Did this happen to your dog and did it stop once he became adjusted to the food?
Please tell me your experiences with this food.
Thanks |

I feed Taste of the Wild and the dogs love it and they are only fed 1/2 cup per day......is 700% protein and 30%vweffies, I was feeding Canidae till they changed their formula and Demon got really sick on it..One of my contacts on her suggested it, she has been feeding it forever to her dogs and they do really great on it also...
We have several people in my dog club that feeds Evo and has for a long time, no problems, I even called several before answering this, and non of them have ever had a problem with it at all..
But, it is true, unless the dog is being worked as it should be, then the dog is dromant and is not exercising, the kidneys will over react to any high protein diet....they have to be able to be worked, or great exercise, to keep the body in tune...You cant just feed a high protein diet and the dog not get exercise....the kidneys will over react and they will be peeing from here to next week..
My dogs do not drink alot of water from Taste of the Wild, they do get their natural treats, and other foods as well..
So, if your just feeding Evo and no other foods, like veggies or treats, yes their kidneys will react and they will be drinking themselves to death.
The Evo brand is a good food, just add other foods to the dogs diet to counteract the protein level and they will be fine and any vet will also tell you the same thing.... |

I have a Rat Terrier/Chihuahua mix that I adopted and started her on Innova EVO (for almost a year) right when we got her so I am not sure how her water consumption was before the dog food, but she has about 1 cup of food and urinates about 4 - 5 times a day, which has been normal for her since we got her. She does not drink a lot of water so it may take a few weeks to get use to the food. |

I have not noticed that with my dogs! I started EVO about 4 months ago. i just changed to barking at the moon because i went out of town and we were gone longer then planned and ran out of food and no one carried EVO!
I am wondering if she is maybe feeding to much food? My dog are about 95lb and I was feed only 2 cups a day! 1 on the Morning and 1 at night! |

My experience is not so much with that food, but with a low-carb diet in general.
Yes, lower carb diets are somewhat diuretic, so at first you will urinate more, retain less water, and be more thirsty. This is why you get a good sized drop on the scale when you first start a LC diet. |

I use taste of the wild dog food along with our natural food as treats. We feed our dog, chicken and carrots for treats.
I have not tried Inova EVO. My food is grain free so he doesn't eat as much food as the low cost filler food.

I have a dog that has been on Evo for about 2 years now. She has an increased amount of water consumption, but she has a long list of health problems that is relates to. It started before she was switched to Evo. I have not noticed a difference as far as after she was on the food. She has a digestive disorder, and does not absorb protein well. Evo is the only food I could find to keep her in good weight. She eats 1/2 cup a day, vs 2 cups a day of what the vet told me to feed. Plus I could see all her bones on the vet's food. |

We feed regular innova. I had to switch from the regular innova for one of my labs to the Lower fat version because it WAS lower in Protein.
Funny, all the research I did and that my vet did pointed to the higher protein causing kidney stones in my dog. Is that the case for anyone else? Can't tell ya. But with my girl (who was 5 when we switched her) never had another kidney stone after that.
My thoughts on EVO - great food - but only for working dogs. A dog at 13 shouldn't need it. Regular Innova should be fine. All my other dogs are on it, as well as my 15 year old and they are doing very well. |

I dont feed innova EVO but I know for a fact that innova evo is not meant for weimaraners that dont have a job like the ones that are just pets. I know why your dog is drinking more and its because the amount of protein is way to high and its doing damage to your dogs kidneys.
To much protein causes problems in dogs that are not being worked like sled dogs. Kidney damage and liver damage are the big ones.
If you dont believe me go ask your vet and they will tell you. Yes vets are not nutritionists but it should be common knowledge that too much protein is not good.
I know i will get thumbs down but Im telling you the truth. Dogs should have no more then 30% protein with the recommended at 25-26% protein. When you get into those 35-50% mark you get into dangerous numbers.
You have an elderly dog he doesnt need that much protein.
If you dont like my answer fine but I didnt mean anything by it.
Edit- Its not a myth it has been proven in humans AND dogs.
The average pet does not get enough work to essentially work off that protein the excess compromises the kidneys, over time with these high protein diets the kidneys start to get ulcers and who knows what else and eventually shut down.
EDiT- And of course NaturaPets are going to tell you that, they make the food, they tell you that so that you will buy it, its all about marketing with any company of food.
Look i fed EVO before they changed their formula to this way to high protein stuff. We have one grain sensitive dog and it did nothing for her what so ever. |
