Subject :How much should I be feeding my Weimaraner a day?..

We just got a 3 year old Weim and are wondering how much food to give it a day. The shelter provided us with food to start and the recommendations for his weight (~75lbs) say 3 cups. It just says feeding though, doesn't specify how many feedings a day. So, how many cups should we feed him throughout the day? Thanks. |

If it states 3 cups then feed 1 1/2 cups twice a day. A weim should be fed small meals twice daily due to bloat.
I suggest feeding your weim a very high quality 100% allergen free food, such as holistic dog food. Weims suffer from stomach problems, cheap food will cause these problems to occur frequently. I feed mine Pinnacle Holistic food and she hasn't had a stomach issue since being on this food, Eukanuba and Canidae gave her problems.
Also, do not feed any human food at all, fruit is fine like apples, melon and vegetables like broccoli or carrots are fine but stay away from anything else, Weims intestines are so delicate that one bout of gastroenteritis will cost you $400 at the vets.

EDIT: If he's chubby cut down to 1 cup morning and 1 cup at night. Take him out to exercise a lot, running and trips to the dog park. Wait 2 hours after feeding to exercise and wait 1 hour after exercise before feeding. this will help reduce the risks of bloat. Remember, Weims are prone to weight gain so it'll take time for him to lose the weight so cut down on treats and stick to a high quality dog food. |

3 cups sounds about right, that is about what i feed my Weim. she is also 3 years old. I feed her that science diet, lamb and rice. she has allergies and i find that food seems to help her. i feed her once a day, during the morning, (she does get snacks through out the day milk bones ect.) i have not had any problems with bloat. she also weights about 68lbs, but i am told she is small built. I would set out the 3 cups in the morning and see how much he takes.Then... continue on with the three cups. Watch his weight... if he is too thin... add a cup... to thick... take out 1/2 cup... But i would not feed a 75 pound dog less then 2.5 cups!!! I think they really need more then that. but that is just me.
Each dog and owner is different. you just have to watch your own dog and use your best judgement! |

prolly around 3-4 cups once a day because if you leave it down, you will never be able to potty train it. and if you do it more than once you will have the same problem |

3 cups a day total is what they mean, so 1 1/2 cups in the morning and evening would be good. |
