My 11 week weimaraner puppy, has been with us for a week. He interacts socially very well, plays, etc. does the healthy stuff other dogs do. Two different vets stated he is healthy, has all his shots, has been dewormed, primary care is all normal etc. Has NEVER tried human food. We switched him from the breeders brand (purina puppy) to Science Diet puppy large breed) and he seemed to eat more. The thing is even after plenty of exercise. He will only eat his food if we stay around with him around the plate and we have to play with the food to spark his interest (doing this only cause he is a puppy and underweight.) If hand feed him or throw the food around he'll eat it. But same old story if we just let him eat what he wants he'll take two bites only and walk away. We cannot hand feed him all the time and if we do the time thing of removing the bowl we are afraid he is to young to deprive him from essential nutrients for his age. Any experienced owners out there, what to do?

I have a dog who has really sensitive teeth. She will do what your puppy does and then walk away. But she is perfectly healthy and has average weight. How do you know that your dog doesn't eat when you are gone? Do you free feed him? If you feed him in the morning and take the food away and then feed him in the evening, I wouldn't do that because he probably isn't hungry at the time when you feed him. I would free feed him and so if he isn't eating and he gets to the point where he is really hungry, he will have to eat. But honestly, I don't really know, he sounds healthy but he has to be eating some how. Maybe you should call your local vet and tell them your situation.

You're right, you can't be starting that habit. Maybe he's just not fond of the Science Diet - it's not one of the better foods out there - too many fillers.

What I'd try is putting a couple of things in/on his food to encourage his interest. A bit of olive or vegetable oil (which is great for his coat) might help. Or a spoon full of no-fat, no-sugar yogurt - which is also good for digestion. Or you might want to add a bit of raw, grated carrots or maybe green beans. Perhaps a bit of low-salt chicken broth (just a bit) stirred into his food - something that's going to smell good to him to encourage him to eat.

I agree with not removing the bowl after 20 minutes or whatever, because of his age. Try adding things and see what happens without you hanging around his dish. You can stay in the room, but not playing with his food.
