Yesterday our Weimaraner ***** whelped 11 puppies. This is her third (and final) litter. We have so far had a 100% survival rate, but this time one pup was born dead and couldn't be revived.
One of the other pups was born a slightly different colour to the others. He has failed to thrive, wouldn't feed from the ***** and I have been taking him from the litter to feed him. However, this evening he had crawled from the ***** and litter. He was very cold and floppy. I fed him and warmed him and put him back. A while later I went to check on him and found him rigid. I presumed he was dead, he really was solid, but the ***** wouldn't let me take him so we left him a while. We went back to find him alive! Grunting and not rigid anymore. We took him away as he was cold and my husband has had him inside his jumper next to his skin. The puppy again went rigid, he stretched out and just froze. It lasted perhaps twenty seconds then he was ok again. |

Hard though it may seem, you will probably lose this puppy. He probably has something very wrong inside. I would take your vet's advice on this. If you do decide to battle to save him, be prepared for heartache. I've only ever lost one pup, I had him pts at 6 days because he weighed less then than when he was born. He needed help from the minute he was born.
Hope I'm wrong, but if you do rear him, you won't be able to part with him because he will probably be a "special needs dog!
Good Luck anyway. |

Not trying to gain 2 points but although I haven't much knowledge I just want to let you know how much I admire the fight you are keeping up on the pup's behalf. I too am a real animal lover and would do the same. Don't have much faith in your vet or his attituede, especially without seeing the puppy. Good luck and hope the little one makes it. |

for now put a heating pad in a very small box.
Cover the box with a towel just leaving on corner open.
I believe you already know to make sure you stimulate the pup to potty.
I hope this one makes it.
I was wondering where you live and how much you charge for your pups my daughter realy wants one |

I think you should keep a close eye on the pup. The mother of the pup should be taking care of it. It could be that the pup needs his mother's milk. |

How is that first off colour puppy now? Normal?
Is this puppy nursing on his own or do you have to tube feed? I can't tell with just these few details if you're taking on heroic measures to save a life that wasn't meant to be. The rigidity you're seeing is probably some kind of seizure and my instinct would be that this pup is abnormal and it might be best to let nature take it's course.
But that isn't by any means the last word on the subject. You should take the pup to the ER vet and get an expert opinion, and also talk to some breed experts that may have seen this coloration and rigidity before.
Good luck. Let us know what you find out. |

If he is cold, this is likely contributing to his stiffness. Furthermore, he will not nurse if he is cold. Puppies do not nurse (and should not be nursed) unless they are in normal temperature range, and it is futile to try until this pup is warmed up. Remember to not overheat the pup either tho, as a normal puppy is lower than an adult dog's temperature (96 is considered normal - aim for that; newborns do not reach adult temperatures of around 100-102 until 3-4 weeks of age). This puppy must be evaluated by a veterinarian but in the meantime take note of whether the puppy is gaining/losing weight, quality of coat (is it rough?), crying and be prepared to answer such questions when you take him in. Good luck - |

Sounds like it might be a seizure. What is the pup's temperature? Fevers can cause seizures.
Can you set up a heating station for the pup? Something with a heat source like a heat lamp or heating pad?
I'd keep it warm, feed it, and keep it away from the mother unless attended in case she rejects it again and it gets chilled. They can't take much of that. |

Did the ***** get any antibiotices while she was prego? The puppy may need anti-bodies. My ESS's litter had that problem and the breeder gave them plain yogurt, unfortunately it was too late for a couple of them but the rest of the litter strived.
As far as giving up on this little one... If you have the time, the patience & the love. Do not listen to the vet's recommendation!!! Pray to whatever higher being guides & helps you! And stay positive!!!
Keep us posted!! |

You need a new vet who doesn't just give up on little puppies like that. Jeez. |

I would find a different vet! You need to give him warmth and nourishment. If he won't feed try to feed him esbilac (puppy formula) with an eyedropper or maybe even a bottle if he'll take it. Keep him next to your skin, under a heat lamp, or whatever you have to do to keep him warm. Check his airway, make sure there is no phlegm or anything, use a bulb aspirator to clear his airway if their is. You never know if he'll make it, but if you try to keep him warm and hydrated, maybe he'll survive. |

It sounds like you're doing everything right, keep going. Make sure that the puppy is kept warm and fed, are you also making sure that you stimulate him to urinate and defaecate after every meal though? If not, you should gently massage his back end with wet cotton wool after every feed until he passes urine and faeces, otherwise he will get colicky and painful, which can cause them to go rigid and grunt. Also make sure you're feeding him on puppy milk replacer and cow's milk can cause gut upsets.
I'd still get him checked over by your vet, and unfortunately he may not survive but you've already proved your vet wrong once so hopefully this one will do well too! |

You need to get this puppy warmed to a minimum of 93 degrees if you are going to have any chance to save him. This is "fading puppy syndrome".
I use a heat lamp but this puppy needs heat from above to warm the air and below. He's cold - pups are not born with any means of regulating their body temps so he needs heat inside as well ie warmed formula.
If you eye dropper feed him b**** replacement milk add 3-4 drop of Karo syrup - either the dark or white. The object here is to give him energy.
With the stiffening, you are critical. Their little bodies cannot take many of those. It is extremely difficult to pull these pups through. A vet would do SQ fluids.
Fluids and heat. |

The rigidness you wrote about might be a muscular problem.
I suggest you consult a veterinary as soon as possible and try to keep the poor puppy warm. |

There could be something wrong, inside. It almost sounds like seizures. We had a puppy do this and they did not live. It was sad. We have never had one again. The pup may have a heart murmmur. They can have a number of problems at birth. Good luck with your puppy. I hope that it makes it. |
