My mom is finally letting me get a puppy this year ( I'm 11). She is going to have everyone help out with the puppy but I am going to be the owner. I was planning on getting a Weimaraner. I've done research about the breed but does anyone have experience with them? If so, would you recommend that they be in a house with regularly visiting children 3 and 5? They are very active children and enjoy playing outside with our 1 1/2 year old altered female American White Shepherd who is VERY friendly towards all living things except for small and furries. Lol. If you have a Weimaraner or know someone with one, what brand and type of food do they feed it and are they happy with the results? I was thinking of getting Royal Canin. Is this food any good?
I am also open to other breed suggestions and food suggestions. We have a large house that the dogs would live in with a 1-2 acre yard and a little dog agility set. Lol. We may move to a house with even more space and a pool with near 2-3 acres.

I know a few people who have weimaraners. Some people are completely in love with their dog, and happy with that breed choice, and some people didn't know what they were thinking when they got that dog. I think the most important thing with this breed is to make sure it gets LOTS of exercise!! My friend has two, and the dogs are nut cases because they never leave the house! They have a tiny backyard, and never go for walks. The dogs go crazy with frustration and chew everything up, and bark constantly. But my mom's friend has one and she thinks it is absolutely the best breed for her. But she also takes long walks with her dog every day. If you have done the research, and are up for a very energetic dog, I think a weim is right for you. And I have heard great things about Royal Canin, so I would stick with that choice. You are going to hear a lot of things about a lot of different foods, but I know Royal Canin is a good food. Good Luck with your dog! I'm glad your parents are letting you get a dog!!

Lovely choice, and that goes for the other dog too.

I found two wonderful sites with pro's and cons of the breed for you if you'd like to look at it:

Good for you for doing your research!
Weimaraners are extremely active, excitable dogs. It's good to start out with training early on, to help calm them down and keep them out of trouble.
They can just fine around children that are already steady on their feet. They are very friendly and only bite if trained to do so.
I know one weimie that is on Diamond brand food (which I've heard makes animals gassy) and one that is on purina large breed puppy. I would ask your vet if there's something specific that you should be feeding, they can often recommend brands.
Weimaraners need to have lots of exercise every day, and will get bored (and possibly destructive) if left to play alone.

Well weimeraners can twist their stomach after eating, seeing how you have children he might chase him which might get him too excited. I think the big dog would be too much to handle. Get like a medium size dog like a lab. Small dogs can't handle small kids and labs are active and can withstand little kids. Royal canin is fine. If your liveing in a place in a pool a lab would be wonderful there.

Weimaraners are very unusual dogs. My ex had one that was an incredibly intelligent dog. They are very sensitive though and as adults seem to be very serious dogs. His decided from the start that she didn't like me and would sit in the armchair glaring at me the whole time I was there. Beautiful dog though, very smart, but I know she didn't like children very much. She tolerated his 7 year old niece, but would get annoyed and hide in a bedroom when she was over.

There's a good FAQ page for you to look at. In other words, they can be great with the children they're raised with, but, don't take to kindly to having another one introduced. They also remember everything.
I'd say go with something a little more happy go lucky. Like a lab, just about any of the hounds, those kind of dogs. If you're looking for one that's nicely colored, look at photos of a Redbone Coonhound.

Well I would not suggest a weim for you, they have so much energy that I can not even began to explain to you. Why don't you since it's your first dog adopt a dog? There are so many homeless dogs being put to sleep everyday, 1/4 dogs in shelters are purebreds and they need homes. It's also much cheaper to adopt because you have shots, spaying and neutering and microchip included. Most adoption fees are only $100.

I don't like those agility sets at all, if your interested in agility you need to take classes, it's so easy to train them wrong.

Royal canin is a low quality dog food, it's full of fat. I also don't like IAMS, science diet, eukunuba, beniful, purina, pedigree, or any other commerical dog food. I suggest Innova, cannidae, wellness, merrick, avoderm, or natural balance.

You have chosen a wonderful breed. It will like to be outdoors getting fresh air and sunshine more than be in the house. It needs lots of exercise.

The one I knew was not around children but was an exceedingly calm and happy dog.

Good luck -

They are great dogs and are usually very friendly and loving.

I suggest that you begin immediately training the new puppy for anything the little ones may throw the dog's way. I pulled on my labs ears and tail (gently) so that he would get used to kids wanting to touch his ears and tail. He is quite gentle with kids. If the kids like to run around this will be great, Weimaraners have a ton of energy.

One word of caution, sometimes this breed has separation anxiety, but due to the fact you have another dog the puppy may not display this at all.

Good luck and have fun with your new dog.
