We have 2 Weimaraner pups in our family (5 months old). We keep them and their bedding clean. We check their ears and clean them as needed. These little guys STINK! Over night, they get this stinky oder. Once they are up and outside to play and potty the smell is not as strong. I feed them Hills Science Diet. We feed that to all of our pets. Any ideas of the cause of the oder?

Actually, I have never been around one of the short-coated working dog breeds, like Weimeraners, Pointers, etc that didn't smell a bit more "doggy" than your normal house pooch.

I think it is because they have more glands producing oils for when they are out in the elements, doing what those particular breeds were bred to do. Natural selection and all that good stuff...

You can try using some of the shampoos that are for dogs with heavily soiled coats, but it may not do much good. Just love 'em like they are, I guess. :-)

First off, taking on two Weimaraners is a big task! :) Good for you!

Second, do you think one of the dogs has a problem with their anal glands?

Anal glands/sacs - this is perhaps the most common cause of doggie odor that won't go away. Anal sacs are two small scent-sacs in the area of the anus. These are a type of "marking" glands. When a dog has a bowel movement, these sacs are normally squeeze, and a very smelly, oily secretion is released with the feces.
If these sacs become infected or impacted (thicker secretion than normal, can't empty properly), problems result. This can be a very painful situation when they become infected! If a dog (or cat) is scared or overly excited, these glands can secrete the smelly, oily substance on the surrounding fur, causing bad odor.

It may be the food, our cats got sooo smelly when we initially fed them IAMS... we switched food and the smell went away

It's likely the dogfood.. Feed them a good quality dogfood.. Science Diet isn't a good food.. It's got all sorts of garbage in it..

Healthy dogs, fed good food, don't smell at all.. no bad breath, no doggy smell etc.
