I have a 5 year old, 120lb Weimaraner with a sensitive digestive system. He's only about 10lbs overweight, he just grew up to be very tall, long and large.
The issue is that dog food gives him gas! We had a very rough time during the puppy years. Finally, at the vet's suggestion, we started him on Eukanuba. It significantly reduced the gas issue.
After the dog food crisis and much research, I determined that Eukanuba is NOT healthy and doesn't have enough meat. I started feeding him, and my Yorkie, plus 2 cats the "Chicken Soup for the Dog/Cat Lover's Soul" food. They all like it better and everyone is fine, except the Weimaraner who has AWFUL, AWFUL gas again.
Please, can anyone tell me a healthy dog food that might help with this problem? Any recommendations for air fresheners would be appreciated too. The kind that kill odor and don't make your house smell like cheap perfume. Thanks. |

Try Canidae or one of the grain free foods
listed under 6 stars foods on this website
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/index.php
And you are right finding the right food will lower the amount of gas produced, give a food a month trial and often just the process of making a food change will cause extra gassiness at first, you can help the transition by adding a spoonful of yogurt with live cultures to his food, bigger dogs can have 2 spoonful. If you know your dog is lactose intolerant from dairy products you can use Acidapholus tablets from a health store instead The yogurt is highly recommended by greyhound adoption groups to deal with gas caused from nervousness in new adopted greyhounds All you have to do it google"greyhound yogurt" and you will see 16 pages of hits
and the other secret we learned is the right food makes all the difference in the world , with many owners having 3 or more greyhound, being able to breathe makes finding the right food as must.
There is no one one food the works for all greys unfortunately so sometimes it is trail and error to find the right food |

I really like Wellness by Old Mother Hubbard. I also like Holistic lamb & Rice. Both of these brands have light natural ingredients so there are no preservitives in these food, and normally preservitives are what cause stinky gas in dogs.
(Make sure you feed dry food, all wet foods cause stinky gas!)
I like using home interior candles for air freshners. They have a strong fresh smell without being to much.
Hope I helped, have a good day! |

There is a dry dog food called "Science diet"; it's used primarily by many Veterinary practices, so it must be good.
Dry Dog food is sometimes best suited for dogs with gas and digestive problems, but ask a vet, as it is less complex and supports less bacteria than canned "wet" dog food. |

The dog food you have him on is a good quality one. Some dogs just have bad gas, I know my dobie can wake me up at night if she lets them go. A way to help alleviate the gas is to give your dog a little bit of PLAIN yogurt every day. The probiotics in it will help him digest the food better and help eliminate some of the gas. I currently have my dobie on Timberwolf Organics Wilderness Elk blend and her gas is a lot less than it used to be. A good thing to do when your dog starts letting them fly is to burn a candle, the flame will eat up all the methane and the scent will help mask the odor, that way you aren't running around with air freshener all the time. Hope this helps! |

I cook for both my dogs. My older one is a bichon he is 12 yrs. old. When he eats beef he gets horrible gas. I also have a puppy who has not had any gas yet. He is going on 7 mths. I think it has something to do with getting older and their digestive systems. But anyway I constantly burn oils in my house. I don't know where you live, but if there is a bath and body works they sell the oils and the burners. They come in all scents, I'm using a spa scent now that smells like I'm at the beach. Its awesome. Try it. As far as the gas goes, maybe its just like people, we all have it but some of us get it worse than others. Good luck |

Try looking into Science Diet foods. My mother's cats have sensitive digestive systems (they puke when they eat cheap foods) and since she switched, they are much better. Science Diet makes several formulas of food that might help your dog.
A good air freshener is called Smells Begone -- it's hard to find and a little on the pricey side, but it works SOOO well! If you have ever smelled one of those ionic air purifiers, Smells Begone smells a lot like that. Five minutes (or less) after you sprayed it you don't smell anything anymore. |

If that is really the breed of your dog, it is not 10 lbs overweight. He is way, way overweight.
You say he's very tall, long and large. Is this a mutt with one giant breed parent?
Our dogs never had gas so I don't know if it's the food we feed them or we 're just lucky. You can check it out at
www.mypetpantry.com
Our dogs do very well on it.
As for your second question, I happen to sell an air purifier that will do the trick. Let me tell you how good that thing is: I work from home and smoke about two packs a day. Visitors who don't yet know me don't realize I smoke until I light up in front of them. A lot of them leave the house with a new machine. The technology used is also good with allergies and asthma. Remember that smoke is the hardest thing to get rid of.
Also remember that air fresheners only mask the odors, they don't get rid of them.
If you want more info, contact me by e-mail. Thanks. And good luck with the food issue. |

Wellness, Innova, Artemis, Canidae are all quality foods.
I know my Chi experiences gas issues when we switch food. Chicken Soup is a quality food - maybe the switch has upset your dog. Were you able to switch the food gradually or did you switch it all at once?
Don't feed Science Diet, Eukanuba, Iams, Purina or any of the other crap brands out there. Get good food for a good dog.
I'll link you to the Artemis site because that's what I feed my girls: http://www.artemiscompany.com They use human grade ingredients - no corn, wheat, fillers or by-products. Our trainer recommended Artemis over the other brands and our girls have done very well.
Good luck - dog gas is THE WORST! Ugh. |

Pretty much any food they sell at petco or petsmart walmart...etc, is crap. Chicken soup IS a good food, and kudos to you for researching and doing whats best for your dogs! I beleive chicken soup is produced by diamond co, which has had some recalls, I would check their website to see if your specific food has been effected.
I have both my labs (5 yr pit/lab mix) and 11wk old chocolate, on Canidae ALS. Check out their website if you want to see the ingreds, they have no gluton products and are in no way associated with the recalls. Innova is also a great food, California Natural, Nurtro (had some recalls I beleive-just wet)
As for the gas...finding the right food should get that in check, but for air fresheners, we use glade carpet powder and then vacume it up, it keeps the house smelling great for days. Also any type of citrus air freshener should be strong and kill the odor for right after he has some gas.
Good luck!! |

I would try Nature's Variety Prarie Chicken. We feed raw diet, but this is the kibble that i give my 10 year old lab/ coonhound mix in with his raw. He has a touchy tummy, and has a lot of gas issues. He has had little to know gat on this food. |

Get a fecal check at the vet, your dog may have a parasite or worms that you don't see & need dewormer or medication. Also, the dog could have a food allergy. Try him for awhile on foods that eliminate wheat & corn, as those are common allergens. Read the labels though, some brands advertise "chicken & rice" on front, then the first ingredient on the label is corn. Our min-pin itched & had ear infections constantly. We tried several foods until getting one that worked. She is like a new dog since changing to a brand called "Lassie" - it comes in chicken & rice, or lamb & rice. For snacks we give Newmans Own organic chicken dog treats - no wheat or corn in them either. "Lassie" is made by Sunshine mills & is available at our grocery, but not all grocery stores carry it, so you may need to look for it. It is not expensive - I was skeptical because of the cost, but our dog is so much better that I'm thankful we tried it. For the odor, try Oust or Febreze. |

This seems to be an issue with most weims, I have had Chelsea for three years and found that what works for one owner may not work for another, that being said my rockstar is on premium edge. It is a pet store brand but not super high end. Sometimes with the rockstars as with the rest of us gas just happens.

Hi, when my weimy started with digestive probs, he was about 5 as well, i had to feed him chicken breast and boiled rice twice a day, and i started using a raised feeding station so he didn't have to lower his head too far to eat....it seemed to work ok. He wasn't able to eat ordinary dog food ever again, but was quite happy with the chicken and rice. I did occasionally mix in the chicken flavour sensitive food that's available from vets, just for a change, and he was on that diet til he died 3 weeks ago at 11 years old. Good luck with your boy. |
