Ok so my female Weimaraner had puppies about 48 hours ago, she seemed to have colostrum but I don't see any milk there now when I squeeze the nipple. How much milk should you see when you squeeze it ?
Its late here and no vets are open to ask. I do have a puppy milk replacer that I am able to give. The puppies don't seem to be dehydrated at all though????? But I'm concerned that no milk is coming out?
Thanks |

Believe me, it's better this way. If she had lashings of milk, the puppies wouldn't be able to draw it off fast enough, and she could run into mastitis. Newborn puppies don't actually take much. It's later on when they will drain her. Just leave her teats alone - the puppies suckling will stimulate the supply naturally - provided you are giving her adequate food (high protein) and she's drinking water, they will be fine. And your best indication is a nest of quiet content babies. If they do seem restless, you can supplement them (especially if it's a big litter) but for now, I'd say all is well.
Oh, I'm getting all broody. |

Leave all of them alone watch to see if she takes any pups and puts them to the side. If she doesn't have milk she will take the smallest and keep that one from eating to give the others more. But usually they don't produce "milk" for a couple days or more. They will have a clear or cloudy looking substance that later turns into milk just like people. Or if the puppies aren't sleeping and just wanting to feed all the time she may not have milk. |

there is only a really small amount of milk when you squeeze it, just make sure you feed her non stop puppy milk and puppy food this gives her more nutrients than normal dog foos as it has more nutrients for the pups, our dog went into paralyzation from lack of clacium from having puppies so we gave her bulk milk and puppy food and she seemed to be good. also if you can try bottle feeding the pups to save your dog from low calcium which can cause her great pain and harm. |

The milk doesn't usually come in until the third day. You'll soon know when she has milk...all the puppies' tails will stand up and start wagging furiously.
Just keep letting the puppies suckle her and give her plenty of water. This will help with her milk production.
It's not a good idea to give a puppy milk replacer just yet. Mum's milk is the best and you will find she will have plenty to feed her litter, just give it time.
Good luck with your litter. |

The pups and Mom should go to the vet for a check up and to get the tails docked at 3 days old so why not take them in when the vet opens tomorrow if she still has no milk or if the pups are fussing. |

I don't know why YOU seem to think you should be checking on her milk supply by milking her/squeezing her nipples. Is she feeding the pups? Are they satisfied? Or, are they constantly crying? Are you weighing them? (You should be.) All puppies should have been weighed at birth had pot-loops or some ID (like painted toenails, etc) put on them & you should be tracking their weight daily. Any loss of weight vs gain, would be a BAD sign. Puppies usually arrive weighing close to 1 pound. If you don't have a baby scale, go GET one & start using it. (It would already be paying for itself if you discovered, they aren't gaining or are loosing weight.)
If you are going to try & express milk, are you using the back nipples or front? The back nipples (under the hind leg) are usually the most productive. It is best to rotate puppies on those, esp the smaller ones, so they can get more milk.
Are you continuing to take her temperature? That's - very important. For 2-3 days after birth, the mother's temp will rise to 102.5-103 then it will return to normal of 101-102. Any fever thereafter, could be a sign of infection, like mastitis. Have you read up on mastitis? (It is one of the most common postpartum problems). It is a bacterial infection of the mammary glands. Check the breasts several times per day for heat, harness, redness, swelling, pain; refusal to nurse.
Placing a warm wash cloth on the breast area both to clean & to massage them, maybe helpful to milk flow. How is her appetite? Often after birth, it isn't good for a few days but FOOD will help stimulate milk production. She should be getting rich very good quality puppy food & will need at least twice-3times the amount she ate, before getting pregnant. (I'm sure you upped her food while preggers.) Supplimental feeding of the puppies will reduce their interest in their mother & will reduce her milk flow.
Additional questions: how large is the litter?
Did you take her in to be checked out by the vet, & to get rid of any retained placentas?
Have you docked the tails yet? (Normally done on day 3.)
I can't BELEIVE you don't have an emergency vet! |
