im getting a weim and im wondering about some stuff: im getting one as a puppy

how much do you exercise them daily?

how much and how often do you feed them?

did you have a hard time training the weim?

how old was it when you got it?

do you ever go off leash with your weim?

how big is your yard? is it fenced?

how is your living space with the weim? and is it big enough to keep the weim happy?

Weimaraners are wild, need a lot of energy, are VERY stubborn and will eat anything including furniture, their own collar and tags, etc. DO NOT get one unless you plan on taking it jogging, frisbee, agiligy or lure coursing. You pretty much have to crate train or they will eat your house.

I would NEVER trust a weim off leash - they see something to chase - they are gone!

how much do you exercise them daily? 2 hours a day

how much and how often do you feed them? 1 cup twice a day

did you have a hard time training the weim? At first yes, but they catch on quickly and love to work

how old was it when you got it? my oldest and my 7 year old at 8 weeks, my youngest i had since birth.

do you ever go off leash with your weim? yes when im in a secluded area where there are not a lot of people.

how big is your yard? is it fenced? 1/2 acre at my one house and 2 acres at my other house and both are fenced and the gates are locked (weims can pop the latch up)

how is your living space with the weim? and is it big enough to keep the weim happy? its awesome, but you have to keep them occupied or give them something to do, or exercised regularly or they will get bored, a bored weim is a monster, yes my house is big enough.

I hope you have researched and have the time to work with a dog like a weim. If you're weim gets bored they can destroy you're house looking for something to do. They are extremely smart and have the second best nose.

I love my weims, could not live without them.

A1: Exercise him or her twice daily, at least an hour each time. (This goes with most dog breeds)
A2:As an adult, you should feed him Four cups of food, two times daily. (That's what I feed my dogs)
A3:They are generally easy to train.
A4:12 weeks.
A5: Yes. You can train most any dog to go off leash, and still come to you when you call him.
A6: Pretty large. It's not fenced, though. The back yard has bushes and trees, though. So it's like a nature fence!
A7:I don't have a lot of space in my house, but any dog can live in even an apartment, and be happy. (With exercise and a LOT of daily activity.)

Make sure you look in a shelter before you go and buy from a breeder. Shelters often have puppies, and if you wait long enough I'm sure you'll get one. Save a life!

Edit: I'm sorry, I meant two cups of food, twice a day, which makes four cups total! Eight cups would be a bit much!

My sister has had her 'gray ghost' for 14 years.....

Her weim is a smart gal and trained easy..she feeds her twice a day-use the feeding plan & schedule your vet will recommend.

Her's was a puppy approx 10 weeks old-she did a lot of research before she finally found a reputable breeder with excellent credentials.

She has never let her dog off leash-there are leash laws where she lives. However, she has a 3 acre spread and a large fenced enclosure ( horse turnout) from when she had her palomino, so her weim gets plenty of exercise daily.

...and she also has a very big home...I would not recommend a weim for a small apartment unless the dog is walked daily for at least 2 hours...they have high exercise requirements.

I have had weims since I was a little kid (my late father loved them) and grew up with 4 different weims. My current weim is 10 yrs old. They are wonderful gentle and loyal dogs, but there are certain traits you must be aware of:

1. They hate being outside when you are inside. Mine lives & sleeps inside when we are in, and is only outside when we go out. They tend to suffer from separation anxiety as they want to be with you all the time. When we go outside, my dogs cries incessantly as if he is being tortured to death, then stops after he can no longer see us or hear us. Be prepared for this...don't encourage this crying...just don't look at them or talk to them when you leave..it just makes it worse.
2. They are full of beans for the first year and half to 2 yrs. As such they need to be kept busy with walks, jogs, play in the yard to chase balls. They pull very hard, so I highly recommend a halti collar which are highly effective and do not hurt them (unlike choke or check chains which hurt them and can cause permanent damage). If you don't engage them with physical activity they can get highly destructive with regards to your garden, furniture, shoes etc in the first 2 yrs. During this time they may not be suitable around very young children or elderly people as they are boisterous, and may unintentionally hurt them, it is never deliberate as they love people immensely.
You need to be firm and consistent in training (but this is a general comment). I suggest obedience training in your local neighbourhood, this also helps with socialising with other dogs. I don't think training weims is any harder than most breeds, you just need to be firm and consistent and remember that the tone of your voice has a real impact, more so than what you say. Use a deep loud "No" when you disapprove, and a high pitched "good boy/girl" with a pat and a hug when you approve....or something like that.
After the first 2 years, they really settle down and are really gentle and great around babies and the elderly. My kids love interacting with my weim. Our daughter is currently 2, and when she could start crawling she would go right up to our weim and "affectionately" smack or pinch him and shove things to his face. Yet he still loved her and copped it on the chin. Even now she still smacks him (as well as smacking us) on ocassions, but our weim still loves her and licks her face.
3. Their prey drive can be immense as they were bred to hunt, and when they smell or see a small fluffy animal or a bird nearby, they become temporarily deaf and are consumed with the desire to catch the animal. So, offleash is generally not a good idea unless it is in a fenced offleash park. I only ever had 1 weim where we could stop him from chasing prey by talking to him...he was the only one where we freely walked him offleash. Again, get a halti collar for walking! This saved us several times while walking when a cat or rabbit came within sight of our current weim who has an incredible hunting instinct. Halti collars are very effective and don't hurt dogs, it just annoys them.
4. A good sized well fenced yard is a good idea. Unless, you are willing to spend an hr in the morning and an hr in the evening each day to exercise them.
5. We had our weims as pups from around 6 to 8 weeks. Our weims lived to b/w 12 to 14 yrs.
6. Weims can suffer from bloat, so it is best to feed them 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup at night if giving dry dog food. Also, remember not to feed them for at least an hr before exercise. Raw bones are excellent (about twice a week) - brisket plus bolar bones are good for their teeth and means less chewing of things as puppies/young dogs.
7. Training a weim to be an indoor dog - it is important to toilet train them and to let them know the boundaries of where they are allowed to roam within the house. This is how we did it.
8. Toilet training- from a young age as a puppy, regularly (or if you sense they want to go to the toilet...usually sniffing the floor for a while tips you off), you take them out to the part of the yard you want them to go. You wait until they do it, and then praise incessantly. You do this enough times, then they know. There are other ways to toilet train, but his is how we did it. We usually let our dog out (typically with me following him otherwise he might just hang around the door) every 4 hrs or so (or every hr when pups) until he does it. (A dog hole in the door may not be a good idea as weims are bigger dogs and would fit a robber as well). Sometimes we fall asleep and forget to take him out, and then my weim walks over to our bedroom door and starts whining..if this doesn't work..then he makes more noise, or pushes the door (if not closed) and licks my face...and then I take him out. This has happened several times, and of course praise them when you do this.
9. Boundaries within the house - you need to be firm so they know their limits. We have a comfy blanket on top of a piece of plush carpet with a comy pillow (wash these and the weim regularly!! otherwise they smell) right near the door to the backyard. He knows this is his spot. Whenever he wanders, you say "no" in a firm voice. You do this repeatedly, then he gets the message. Later on you invite him to where you want him to be, which may be the front door when someone rings the doorbell (just for security...my wife does this all the time, she feels safer answering the door with our weim next to her) or into one of your rooms. We also invite our weim to play hide and seek with our kids inside the house and they enjoy it, but only when we invite him. If you don't they may rule your house. This way they know where they are allowed to go. Oh yeah, weims do shed, so have a small hand vacuum near their bed so you can regularly vacuum their bed and around their bed.
Once you aware of their traits be prepared for a dog that will love you and your family immensely and unconditionally, and to have your face licked continuously by your weim.
