How can you make a naturally hyper and energetic dog more calm? im getting a weimaraner and every time i get info about them it says i need alot of exercise with him. How can i make him more calm. i can give him about 20-40min of exercise everyday day usually is that good enough? for a weim?

i have a small lake by my house so i could sometimes let him swim in it, im just worried that he will not go too far or run away when he goes in cuss humans arent allowed to swim in that lake.
also how can i teach him to become a better swimmer?

im getting it as a puppy so swimming in the bathtub maybe??

any other tips would be great too

also i need some dog names, around 2 syllables i was thinking of alpha but im not sure something unique so dont say MAX its way too overused

Not good enough, weims need at least 2 hours of exercise and mental stimulation a day, if they don't get it you have a monster on you're hands.

Weims get bored very easy and without mental stimulation they can destroy you're house basically.

As for swimming some take to it naturally some need help, just gradually introduce it.

You DON'T need names now, wait till you get the dog and learn it's personality.

Well it's really going to depend on the dog. I wouldn't classify well bred weimaraners as hyper. They are energetic and really have a good bit of stamina by nature but the whole hyper tendency is a result of overbreeding. A well bred adult weimaraner is actually fairly laid back though they still need regular exercise to keep them that way. When they're young they need more exercise than when they are mature.

The time it takes to get them good exercise is also going to depend on the type of workout. If you sit there and throw a ball 20 ft they can do that all day and never get tired. Swimming is a very good workout for them since it's low impact and uses up a lot more energy. For most dogs 40 minutes of swimming will do well. I'll generally either take my dogs swimming for a while or throw the ball really far for them or take them out to a safe place and just let them run like crazy.

Your not going to get it done just walking with them. They are far to athletic for that and they can out walk you at least 4 to 1 no problem. 40 minutes of walking isn't even going to put a dent in it. To really get them a workout they need to be able to move at their full pace which you simply can't keep up with without a 4 wheeler or a horse like we use to keep up with the field trial weims.

What should be noted though is that 40 minutes is just pure exercise. That doesn't include your training time. If you can only devote 40 minutes 7 days a week to the dog it won't likely go well for you. You need to spend some serious time training and socializing, especially in the first year to 18 months. I generally prefer to introduce new stuff on the weekends with a bunch of short training sessions (they bore easily) then through the week spend 10 minutes or so every day reinforcing it. Socialization is also easier on the weekends when other people have free time so I can introduce the dog to them and their dogs. It's also best to just work on stuff throughout the course of every day life.

Training will really do a lot for keeping your weim calm, especially when you just work on stuff at random points throughout the day. It'll also go a long way in making it easier to exercise them. Working on fetching and off leash recall makes it a ton easier.

Swimming is real easy to teach, especially once you get the pup fetching. Forget the bathtub and don't ever force the pup into water. Just find a really shallow area that gently slopes down into the water and start out by throwing something for it to retrieve where it can just walk in shallow water to get it, gradually go deeper and deeper until it just has to swim a very little bit to get the toy. Do that until it does it without hesitating then move farther and farther out.

I always liked the name Blitz or Blitzkrieg for a weim since they're german.
