we just got a 9 week old weimaraner puppy. lately (the past few days) when we take her outside to use the bathroom, all she does is eat mulch. we weren't too concerned until she threw up mulch last night. she ate fine all day today so i don't think there is any kind of blockage but i would like to nip this in the butt before something serious happens. what can i do? and if the mulch had poisoned her, she wouldn't have been normal today correct? thanks so much

You first need to take a look at her main diet. If you are feeding her a supermarket/commercial brand of kibble (Ol' Roy, Pedigree, Beneful, Iams, etc.) or table scraps, it may be upsetting her stomach and it could be nutritionally unbalanced. Switch to a high quality kibble.

What type of mulch is it? There are cocoa smelling & flavored ones that can be very appealing, and can be very UNSAFE for dogs. If this is JUST regular wood mulch, then sprinkle it with cayenne pepper (get this from your grocery store latino section). Reapply after any rain, until the habit is broken. Be sure to verbally make a correction, anytime she sniffs/ shows interest, in the mulch. Pine straw is a much better mulch, IMO for dogs.

Get some bitter apple spray. Take her out to the mulch. Take out a piece of mulch and spray a lot of the bitter apple on the one piece of mulch (don't let her see you spray it, do it before hand if need be)and let her taste it. Hopefully, this will deter her from ever wanting to taste another piece of mulch for the rest of her life. YUCK!
