I have a Weimaraner so here's the deal: I think what your talking about is the test for hip dysplacia. You should get your Weim from a reputable breeder that you've done lots of homework on and visited many times. These dogs can develop hip issues because of their size but this can be avoided by getting a well bred one. The breeder should have the hips looks at and certified before you bring your pup home. Also, you should see the paper work on the dog and ***** to verify that they are both certified for their hips.
This should be the least of your concern with this breed. They are EXTREMELY high energy. Your going to have a dog that has the energy level of an excited puppy until it is 3 - 3.5 years old. This means 3+ miles of running daily / hiking / field training DAILY. Its a big time investment. They are very smart and need to be challenged physically and mentally or they will become destructive to your house. Their personality is very willful and don't respond well to yelling so if you have a firm but gentle personality, that's good. They get lonely easily so crating them for 8 hours a day is NOT an option. 4 hours is about the max unless you get one that is older - 5 years or more. Also, they need to be fed 3 times a day to avoid bloat so 2 big meals/day doesn't work.
I'm not trying to tell you to not get a Weim; they are AMAZING dogs - beautiful, smart, graceful, loving, very funny, loyal, great watch dogs and appropriately friendly and protective. BUT they are a serious handful. There are other dogs out there that make great companions that aren't as "high maintenance" as these. If you decide to go ahead with it then good luck! And don't forget to read lots of books before you bring your new friend home |
