Very young puppies should not be left along for more than 4 hours ... and preferably not for longer than just a couple hours until they're a little older. You have to remember they live their first 8-12 weeks with mom and a bunch of siblings so, being all along for long periods of time is VERY stressful for them. As they get a little older, the time can be increased.
6 hours is not a very long stretch and after a pup is about 4-6 months old (depends on the exact puppy) that should be tolerable for them. You might consider looking into getting a little older puppy for this reason.
So, I guess my answer would be, that I wouldn't leave a puppy under 4 months alone for 6 hours. But, older than that, I don't see a problem with that length of time.
However, I wouldn't leave a puppy alone in a room with toys and food for any length of time. Invest in a crate or an X-pen. Or be prepared for major house soiling and damage. |
