i am looking at getting a puppy. for around the house. and for rabbit hunting. anyone have any suggestions, comments? do beagles really bark all the time?

If you are going to use the dog to rabbit hunt with, the beagle is the number one rabbit dog in the world. They are also good family pets, even tempered are good around children. The Weimaraner on the other hand was bred to be a pointer, and have the ability to retrieve and tree also. They are a fairly good natured dog, but it's strong point is definitely not rabbit hunting.

A weimaraner is a pointing dog that's been bred to hunt birds by hunting body scent and then stopping or pointing when a hot scent is located. They can also hunt foot scent and trail game, but here again, their genetic predisposition is going to be to stop on the scent.

A beagle is a hound that's bred to hunt ground scent as well as body scent. When a scent is located most will let out some voice with experience teaching you what each type of voice for your particular dog means.

Beagles will trail a scent through the thickest of cover where rabbits hide and trail the rabbit until it comes back around to the hunter or in some cases goes down a hole.

There have been some good books published over the years on beagles and rabbit hunting. It's a good idea to get one and learn what you can. Amazon usually has some good deals on new and good condition used books. Beagle. The reason they are short, low to the ground and not much taller than a rabbit is so they can easily go where the rabbit goes. The Beagle was bread for rabbits, squirels, fox and raccons. Weimaraner are bird dogs and to large to follow that little rabbit in thick brush.

I'll take the one that is small enough to go where the rabbits can go.

beagle's can be vocal, but can be easily trained that it's not acceptable behavior.

Use a beagle for the bunnies. Weimaraners are for winged things.
