Dixie our Doxie weighs in at 18.2 pounds, Her ideal weight is 12-13 pounds (she's more of a tween than a mini).
This is the diet we have worked out with our vet, she has had the blood work, exam etc. She has no other health problems. She started her diet 4 days ago and we are wondering how long it will take her to get down to a healthy weight, what are good weight goals for her to have? 1/2 a pound a month? 1/2 a pound every 2 weeks?
She walks 1.5 miles 5 mornings a week
3-5 intense fetch sessions a week
lots of playing with her 70 pound weimaraner brother
She eats 1/2 a cup of kibble and 1/2 a can of no salt greens beans a day, spread out into 2 meals.
2-3 mini-carrots as snacks through the day.
Her kibble is high quality no corn/soy/wheat or questionable meat source. It's called VF.
twice a week she gets a small rawhide chip, no flavoring on it. |

Sounds like an good diet with a nice amount of exercise -- be sure to have plenty of fresh water available at all times. Also I would just make sure that she walks daily. Are you trying to schedule in rest cycles? I'd just add 2 more walks that are are not measured but at least 30-40 minutes at a moderate pace. Green beans and carrots are great no/low cal fillers so your dog won't be so hungry.
Also - you said she's 18 pounds and you want to her to lose at least 5 pounds -- that's almost a 1/3 of her body weight! I would not be concerned about her weekly weight loss. Just slow and moderate will win this race. GOOD LUCK!! |

Heini - my past doxie was overweight too. We used to boil 80% lean ground beef drain and add to white rice and that's all he got. His back got so bad with his weight. My Dad was really bad at feeding him table scraps for treats and sabotaged the diet. It took Heini several months to drop just a half pound or so but hopefully you can stick with the diet plan you have prepared and Dixie can drop more weight quickly. |

You need to walk your dog EVERY single day. Other than that, I think it's a good plan.
***The kibble is not one I'd feed to my dog (too many grains), but it's a good food. Shouldn't affect the weight loss. |

Feed her according to what is on the bag for her weight as it is now, not what it should be. Get rid of the rawhide. It's not digestible. Give her a real bone instead She should lose weight slowly. Rapid weight loss is not good for her. Be careful with her at this weight because it's so hard on her back. No 'begging' sitting up, as few stairs as possible, etc. Once she's in shape, and has her muscle tone back, it shouldn't be a problem. Good for you addressing her weight problem! She'll be much healthier for it! |

Ask your vet about a no grain food. I chose Solid Gold Barking at the Moon for my Dachshunds when I plan to travel. Other than that I make their food. Mine are standards and on a meal patterned after the BARF, but with cooked meat my male standard has lost about 1/2 lb. per month. On a so called "diet food" he lost no weight and started to get sick. He is very sleek and glossy now. He eats a variety of vegetables along with his meat and has Salmon oil. It is very good for your dog.
PS He isn't exercising any more than he was before. |

actually just by eyeballing it all you can know how to manage food intake, just slowly decrease food intake and you will see improvement
very bad situation for a doxie to be significantly overweight--beware, be warned
a significant amount of the exercise is overdoing it, watch carefully and if they get tired/look tired/slow down significantly, carry them,
play every day indoors if bad weather, walk everyday outside if weather ok,
if live in rural area or happen to be in a large green space with no else around they love to be off leash
didn't get age of doxie---that would have helped
Please see my site for lots more info and contact me if any more questions arise.
the obesity dramatically increases the chances of further problems in this breed
it's a food intake issue
