Well we we decieded we want a dog. BUT protective big dog (but also who is friendly to children IF you train them as puppys and grooming isn't a problem) my dad knows 2 familes. One has a weimaraner and one has a dobie. Dobie was first and WE FELL IN LOVE with it this was 2 days before today. Today we met a Weimaraner and we also FELL IN LOVE with it. The dobie we met was a boy and the weimaraner we met was a girl. They were both very friendly to my little sister who is 8. Problem we don't know which one to choose here is the facts
Dobbies:
Very nice and playful (if you train them well)
Too hyper (VERY VERY hyper as a baby and still normaly hyper as a adult)
Weimaaraner:
Again very nice and sweet
Not as hyper as a dobbie though
Problem:
Very slow with housebreaking
Which one should my family get? We fell in lvoe with both. Please say your experiances with both/one type of dog and also say good things and bad things about it. Thank you so much in advance! |

Weimaraner's are VERY smart. They are very obedient and great dogs.. Not to mention beautiful. MY cousin has one and he is great with the babies. |

I agree with Lizzie. Do more research. Not every dobe is hyper and not every weim calmer. I have seen some weims more hyper than some of my dobes. Just depends on the dogs personality. And our dogs weren't raised with kids but they are good with kids. They adore my nephews when they come over. But dobes need proper socializing and training. To be more objective you should talk to more people that own both breeds and maybe meet some breeders for both breeds. Then you should be able to make a better more informed decision. |

This really is a personal decision about your family, based on children, other pets in the house, etc. Just do your research. Both of these breeds can be excellent when trained properly. Weims need A LOT of exercise, and although Dobies need exercise, in my experience they do not become as neurotic, like if you miss a day of a walk.
My best friend growing up had Dobies their whole life. They were wonderful pets. Great with children and all the guests that came to their houses. My in-laws have Weims and they are good pets, too. Just make sure you can set aside enough time to exercise and train both of these breeds, because if not trained they can accidentally hurt a child or another pet easily. |

Merciful heavens, don't base your whole opinion of two breeds on ONE dog each! I've see Weimaraners that were hopelessly hyper and have owned calm, gentle Dobes. I don't think you know enough about either breed to base a lifetime decision on. Do more research, consider more breeds, go to dog shows, get some of those breed selection books at http://www.dogwise.com to help refine your search, contact the national breed clubs for more information on specific breeds (they are on the internet) and never rush into buying a dog. It makes more sense to get the right one than it does to get one right away. |
