Sorry for asking this twice... Rhodesian Ridgeback, Weimaraner? Which breed?
I have boiled my choices down to two breeds. I am an experienced dog owner and I will have no problem to handle these two dominant breeds. I have owned many dogs in the past. I am now looking at only two breeds. I cut GSD's and Great Danes out of my choices (which were only in there because my wife personally likes those two breeds) I am a CHP officer in the Los Angeles area. I have two children ages 10 and 13. We are all very active and athletic and get lots of running done at the local beach (Dockweiler Beach) and from what I understand these two breeds are perfect for us. However.... I would also like to train my dog to Guard me and my family and the house when I am not around. we already have a wonderful watch dog but he is so small his bark would only anger the intruder rather than run him off if this intruder is bold enough to break into my home which I am known around the neighborhood as the local law enforcement officer. I need a dog that can back up the little guy if he gets attacked. Which one of these breeds would be capable of being trained perfectly as a guard dog yet retain his family spirit and still be able to take into the public without any problems

Rhodesian Ridgeback is my vote.

I "baby sat" for one for a while, and I'm impressed with their protectiveness and their ability to be family dogs. Sort of on the clingy side, and need LOTS of exercise, but nothing bad.

They have a "don't mess with me" look about them and a bark that sounds like a hell hound.

Over all, I'm not impressed with weimeraners. They're a little empty headed for my tastes. Plus, they look weird. That color is just weird.

EDIT TO ADD:
Wow!
I can't believe I'm the only one who thinks RR!
They're amazing dogs people! Maybe these folks haven't been around them.

As I said before, go with the Weim. Just the size alone should be enough of a deterrent. They also have a deep bark, and if I didn't know the dog, I probably wouldn't want to be in your yard with him/her.
But they are great family dogs and love to run! I think one would be perfect for your family!

I'd say a Weim, but it might be worthwhile contacting your local breed club, look for one on yahoo or the AKC.org website. Ask other people who show their weims or ridges how they are with protection training. You might also contact a local schutzund club and see if they have any recommendations as well.

Wow, weim? Really.

Go with the ridgeback! They were BRED to take down lions for crying out loud. Not bred to hunt them, or corner them for their hunters. They were bred to TAKE THEM OUT!

Weims have goofy faces, AND they are stupid brutes to boot.

Weimaraner, the RRs I've met have been snobby and unloving, no offense to any RR owners. I just love Weimaraners, they're eyes and ears are addorable!

Hope this helps!

I train dogs for Schutzhund (protection training for competition) and if you want potection out of one of those breeds I would recommend the Ridgeback. Weims are wonderfull dogs, they will bark at things outside the fence, and they will play ball all day long. They are breed and used as hunting dogs, they are not protection dogs. Now, I am not doubting that they can't be trained for protection, just that it comes less naturally to them. Ridges are high energy dogs (so are weims) and will take more work on the simple things such as chewing and pulling the leash, but they have a higher prey drive as well as an instinct to protect. Don't know if you looked at Belgium Malinois or not, but they are excellent guard and family dogs. One of the officers I train dogs with has one as a partner and he is just wonderful. No matter the breed you end up with, contact you local Schutzhnd club for advice on how to pick the best pup of the litter for what you want, and to begin training as well. Good luck

For protection . . . I know some may disagree but, it is my opinion, that the only time is it a good idea to get a dog for the purpose of protection is in professional or agricultural situations and only when the owner/trainer is humane and knowledgeable of dog behavior and dominant dog training/handling. In all other situations - probably 99.9% - an alarm system, security fence, or other measures are much more appropriate and effective.

I don't aggree on training a dog to be protective. Training a dog to be protective just ruins it natural instinct and a trainned guard dog is much likely to attack your kids, your family and your friends. Regardless of breed, dogs are naturally protective of there family once they reach 18month old. No matter the breed, an 8week old puppy is not going to be interested in protecting you, as they are too busy learning new things.

A well socialised dog and well exercised and obedience trainned of either breed will be much better as a non aggressive protection dog, by socialising it, it learn to reconise the behaviour of good guys and the bad guys!

The Ridgeback is dignified, trustworthy, loyal, intelligent and makes a great family pet. It is extremely protective of its immediate family and has a streak of independence – probably left over from its hunting background. Ridgebacks are very good with children, especially when raised with them. However young Ridgebacks can be too rambunctious for small children and toddlers. Ridgebacks are wary of strangers and also other animals and must be thoroughly socialized and obedience trained while a puppy. This training should be continued through adolescence and even into adulthood to minimize any aggressive tendencies. This dog breed is too large and too strong to not be thoroughly obedience trained. Because the Ridgeback is so intelligent and somewhat independent, training can be difficult and needs to be re-enforced often. This breed is very confidant and will test members of the family to try and find his place in the family hierarchy. Overall the Ridgeback makes a wonderful companion and family dog as long as you let him know you are in charge. Ridgeback’s don’t bark much but make great watchdogs. Ridgebacks do best with experienced dog owners.

The Weimaraner is a handsome, elegant, very intelligent, self-confident, friendly, charming and high-energy dog. The Weim is also stubborn and headstrong and will frequently test its place in the family pack. Crate train the new Weim puppy as soon as you get him home as the puppies will chew everything as soon as they are left alone. This dog breed requires an athletic owner that is prepared to provide leadership, early socialization and on-going obedience training well beyond the puppy and adolescent level. A professional trainer would be of great help with this breed. This high-energy Weimaraner needs an athletic family that can satisfy his demanding exercise requirements. This dog doesn’t do very well with children unless it is raised with them. However if it grows up with children it makes a great playmate as it is patient and will chase balls endlessly with them. Weims need to live indoors and spend a lot of time with their families. They do not like to be left alone. Well trained Weimaraners are a delight and are capable of enriching the family life of their owners. However poorly trained dogs can be destructive, rambunctious, have a high prey drive and will try to dominate other dogs. Weimaraners make good watchdogs and are very protective and make good guard dogs. Weimaraners are not suitable for novice or inexperienced owners.
