got some qeustions
what do you think of the name (female wiem): Maya
I tried teaching her name like in the pet training vids, but my weim doesent look up ever so i cant really praise him
what are some good treats to reward him when he does do something good? i got these dry puppy treats but he doesent seem to like it too much, hes enjoying the wet food more, so any specific treats for a 2month puppy
is it normal for puppies to sleep alot? cuss i got him yesterday and hes been sleeping alot, i heard they were high energy dogs (maybe when hes older) when should i start tricks like sit stay , teaching him to walk on a treadmill (for when its ugly outside)(supervised offcourse)
at the breeders when i was picking him out he was very nervous and shaking but it seems it calmed down a bit and wants my attention, what are some good exercises for a young puppy
when i was looking and the training videos (even the ones with "difficult" dogs) they made it look so easy to train them, and i thought it would be the same, maybe im taking this all too fast cuss its only his 1st day second night here.
any other tips would be great: |

First always take a new animal to the vet. Yes, puppies sleep alot but they should be bouncing off the walls when awake. And yes, if after one day you are already frustrated with trying to teach a name then you are rushing yourself. First thing you have to do is bond with her. Use her food for training, no one said it has to be treats. Just hand feed her some of the wet food for a while. Without asking for a behavior. You need for her to anticipate good things from you. Not want to avoid you because you constantly try to give her something gross. Then start using her name for the reward.
Just FYI, beware that she does not have food allergies, all 3 Weimer I know are allergy dogs. |

hi,
Originally bred as a gundog to handle big game like deer and bear, the "Silver Ghost" was a highly sought-after breed in its native Germany. Today, these elegant but demanding dogs can still be found out on the hunting grounds, but can also make a fine family friend if well exercised.
here's more info:

hope this helps. |

You made a VERY bad decision, picking out the nervous and shaking pup. You always pick out the most outgoing pup in the litter. |

Maya... Cute! I bet it is a pretty dog. I know ppl who have this GORGEOUS dog with shiny blue eyes... And it's a Weimaraner.
Look, what I did to get my dogs' attention for his name was holding a treat right under my chin (so when he looks at the treat he looks at me) and call his name in a non authoritary, playfull, friendly voice.
And don't tell me that this doesn't work because I trained a blind and an old dog!
If he doesn't respond to "normal" treats, then maybe you could use something that he really likes, rare and special, from roasted lamb to cooked liver. Just make sure you don't give him CHOCOLATE, ONIONS or COW MILK. This three can be deadly to a dog.
About sleeping, relax. He is a very young puppy. Recognize that he is in a brand new world full of strang smells and ppl and just needs to take it calmly. Puppies sleep a lot? Well it depends on the puppy. Lucky you to have a calm one!
If he is easily scared, don't get into very excited and rough plays. Pet him and stroke him several times a day, and in the end give him a piece of meat. He will make it up as a good thing after all.
Good exercises for a young puppy? Well as soon as he gets his vaccination you can walk him outside and throw him balls, hunting dogs love it. Give him things to chew or a Kong. A Kong is a toy in which you can put food inside and your dog has to spin it to lure the food out. It might sound stupid, but it really is great.
At his early age, probabilly he just wants to sleep, eat, run after a ball, walk and be petted.
Yes you are talking it too fast. To train your pup, he needs to bond with you. To bond with you, he will need constant petting and affection. A bond is not something that you creat overnight.
So, enjoy this good times while you can. In 1 month you may begin serious training. Good luck!
Kiss to you, kiss to Maya |

Maya is a cute name!
Any good treat would be either a peice of puppy food or any other high quality tasty treat (I use old mother hubbard's dog treats, you can also use cheese or meat , like ham, turkey, etc.)
Puppies can sleep up to 16 hours a day (sometimes more sometimes less). And he's trying to get used to new surroundings.
Take the training in stride. You should really only train one command at a time. First let the pup get used to you and it's new surroundings before starting training. Up to 5 or 6 short training sessions (4-5 minutes, puppies have short attention spans) throughout the day and only one command until the dog learns it is best.
Short walks and playtimes are good for young puppies. Keep in mind you can increase the activity as the pup gets bigger and older, but for now no running (long distances, etc. I know puppies run around, but just don't over do it-less joint problems later in life).
And as far as training videos, check out www.leerburg.com there are some videos that would be beneficial to you. Like: Your Puppy, 8 wks to 8 months, and Basic Obedience. |
