Plastic is always better. #1 A LOT of smart dogs have discovered how to make their wire kennels collapse thus escape at will, lol. Secondly a plastic crate is more confined and makes a dog feel more comfortable, like they're in a den. And lastly, plastic kennels are MUCH easier to clean and disinfect. With wire kennels you need a BBQ grill cleaning brush and a gallon of bleach to disinfect and clean it! With plastic a little bleach, a hose, and an old rag will do the trick. Also wire kennels can rust and leave rust stains on your carpet after a few months/years of cleaning/use so make sure to put something under wire kennels if you decide to use one (a rubber mat would be perfect).

I like the wired crate the best. but ummm...... it really is your preference both work the same and really good, but i have always liked the wired better, matches everything, dogs can see through it and see you and it also is very portable cause it folds up small, it is very clean cause its wire and just fold it take it to the backyard, hit with the hose, let it dry and its perfectly clean, as the plastic is harder to clean and it not as appealing and the dogs cant see out it.

I would get the wired. It has a removable tray, so he can't hurt himself, AND a divider. He can grow into it as he grows older, instead of wasting your money on buying more crates to fit his size.

I have a wired crate, and its the best thing in the world for my puppy, though she's a Chihuahua-Feist mix and is only 7lbs.

I've been using the plastic crates for almost 35 years. Although they are not collapsible like the wire ones, I feel that they are much safer. On the other side of the coin, if you are planning on showing your Weim, I would go with the wire crate to take to the shows, because you can *break it down.*

Believe it or not, a dog can get out of a plastic one easier than they can a metal one. The door can actually be popped open.
I use metal crates in my home. My one girl did break one of the wires due to her extreme hyperness, but the crate has held up very well. The broken wire was removed. She pinched her toe on it, but other than that was fine.
I personally prefer the metal ones, though a do have a couple of the vari-kennels that I have used for transporting. But for every day use, I recommend the metal crates.

It's honestly personal preference.

The wire crate- I have the exact same one for my dog. The divider is great because you can buy the sized cage you need for when the puppy is fully grown, but limit the amount of space he has when he's little. This is important for teaching him to relieve himself outside. Wire crates aren't airline approved so you won't be able to use it for travelling in a plane. They also fold up flat.

Tha plastic crate- Airline approved (should be), but it doesn't fold up. You've also got no option of making the space smaller when he's younger.

So I prefer the wire one, but honestly, it's up to you. If you do get the wire one, it's best to put a cover over it as well, just to give him a bit of protection and shelter.

Good luck with your puppy!

You have a major "thing" for Pet-smart, like there is NO other option for dog products/supplies. Do you own stock in that company? Just because they are convenient, doesn't mean that they're the best place to shop.

For starters, I don't like either of your crate choices. The wire is only medium strength, on the 1600. The Midwest 1300 is Heavy Duty. You have no way of knowing how strong, or Houdini-like your pup will be. (IMO, go strong, rather than weak.) You FORGET... most Weims are super-smart. You ought to see the pictures of doors & gates, they have opened, illustrated in the book, Weimaraner Ways.

I've already stated, WIRE is better. It gives better ventilation (you might be shocked at how easily a dog can get heatstroke.) It also allows the dog to SEE OUT better, which can help calm the dog either in the house or the car & help prevent car-sickness. The wire crate can be folded down nearly flat, but plastic only breaks into 2 large halves.

If it turns out your puppy likes a more cave-like crate, you can drape it

I've heard stories of dogs being hurt with either. For my part, I trust the wire crates more. Since they're metal all around, they're a bit harder to break. I have seen many pictures of holes chewed through the plastic crates; that, to me, seems really dangerous. Plus, one thing I like about wire crates, aside from optional dividers, is the fact that you can cover it, or leave it open, depending on your dog's preferences.

Both are good for crate training, but the divider definitely makes the wire crate preferable unless you want to buy different sizes of the plastic one. The only advantage I can see to plastic crates are if you plan on taking your dog on a plane.

I prefer the wired crate.
If you plan on crate training your puppy, there's a chance he'll have accidents in it. These could be piddles and poops or just water spilling. It's hard to get into the small opening of a plastic crate to clean it out, while a wired crate usually has a tray that you can slide out to clean. It's also beneficial if your puppy is going to grow a lot. If his crate is too large he'll have a harder time figuring out that he's not supposed to eliminate in it. He'll create separate places for sleeping and eliminating. So with the divider of the wired crate you can make sure he only has space to sleep, so he'll wait to eliminate (if he can, check out the guidelines for how long puppies can wait in between eliminations. Puppy can only wait so long before he just can't hold it anymore.) If you're worried about the safety of the wired crates, I'm not familiar with any pets getting hurt in them. You can always line the inside of the crate with soft fabric.
A note about price: check for online coupon codes you can use toward your purchase. You just make a google search for "coupons for petsmart". I've found petco to be a little less expensive, but you might not.

Border collies are known for their ability to find jobs to do. When left alone, they will find their own job. Example; My border collieXLabrador retriever mix is a master escape artist. Her niche in life is to find a weakness and infiltrate it.

That being said, she sleeps in a wire crate (a size bigger--I got her the one recommended for the Great Dane so she could stand up, walk around, sretch out, and be comfortable--also we can keep her food and water bowls in there) on the porch on most warm nights. She has yet to be able to figure out how to get out--and trust me, she has been looking. She can flop herself down on the floor without damaging the crate or herself. Also, the hard plastic tray in the bottom really does help in keeping her nails shortened. She'll dig in the bottom if she gets partcularly bored at night.

And as far as 'getting hurt' goes--Holly hasn't gotten herself hurt in it. I'd say as long as you go with a crate a dog breed larger than the dog you have--he/she will have plenty of room and not feel too cooped up or bothered by it and less likely to be hurt by it.

As far as your question:

Which is better for crate/kennel training?
*The wire. The dog is able to see you, and is less stressed/freaked out by the idea of being separated from you. It's less likely to suffer from anxiety problems, too.

Which do dogs like better?
*The wire. It's spacious, the bottom of the crate will help keep the nails shortened, it has high visibility. It's far more sanitary. It's VERY durable.

Which is overall better?
*The wire. Better quality. Lasts a very long time. Just overall better.

(It's dog tested, Border Collie approved.)

(Note:
I bought one of those plastic ones to allow my rabbit to house. It was the size to accommodate a medium sized dog. The rabbit ended up chewing on the plastic. ..And that's just a rabbit.)
