I am wanting a dog, and I am really interested in weimaraners. I am wondering if it is a good dog for me. Here are some characteristics about me:
I am:
Sporty(I love being outside and running around)
Smart(I can train a dog and have done it before)
Loving(Get attached to things easily and give a lot of affection)
etc...
Please give some tips and tell me if it would fit my personality. Also give some characteristics of weimaraners. |

~ STEP 1: CHOOSING THE RIGHT DOG- Check and see if it is a good dog for you!
Remember, some dog breeds are good for you, but not others. Some dog breeds are good for others, but not you. It all depends on your lifestyle and family. NO DOG BREEDS ARE BETTER OR WORSE THAN ANOTHER!!! They are all equals! People make the dog the way they are, and the dogs are not to blame! You know how you always see how a dog attacks someone on the news!?!? If people would have trained them properly, do you really think that would have happened? ALSO, If people suggest dog breeds for you, don’t listen to what they say because they don’t know very much about you. All dogs are different and have many different types of needs (amount of exercise, training, food they need, energy level, size, etc.) that you may or may not be able to give to them! So here is a lot of info on getting a good dog for YOU and helpful tips and websites for dog owners!!!
~Also, before getting a dog, you need to consider the following….
-Are you and everyone in your family healthy enough to handle a dog?
-Do you have the money to buy the dog food, toys, and medicine from the vet? It costs AT LEAST $800-$1,000 the first year of owning a dog!!!!!!!!
-Are you willing to give your dog daily exercise?
-Are you willing to train your dog?
If the answer is “no to even ONE of these answers, you are NOT ready for a dog.
~Here is a great dog quiz that is ran by Animal Planet that determines dog breeds that will fit well into your lifestyle!
<a href="http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselector.do">http://animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselector.do</a>
Also, try this quiz! I think this one may be a little bit more accurate than the other. Maybe try using the results from this one instead…..
<a href="http://dogtime.com/matchup/start">http://dogtime.com/matchup/start</a>
~After the quiz, do some homework on the dog breeds that the quiz suggested! Choose the one you think most fits your family! Check out….
<a href="http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/a.htm">http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/a.htm</a>
~STEP 2: WHERE TO GET A DOG?
ADOPT! Shelter dogs are VERY inexpensive ($50-$200) and are just as good as any other dog from a breeder! They are in need of a loving home! Are you willing to give a dog a second chance that may not even be alive the next day because no one adopted them? There are millions of dogs that die each year that have no clue what they have done wrong. They die wondering, “What terrible thing did I do to my master that meant so much to me to make them leave me all alone to die here with no one to love me ever again?
Here is a great site that lists shelter dogs in your area! (first type in your zip code)
<a href="http://petfinder.com">http://petfinder.com</a>
Shelter pets die when no one was kind enough to save them. They will NEVER get another chance and never got a good life.
Until there are none, rescue one.
If for some reason you can not or do not want to adopt, please get a PUREBRED (NO TEACUPS OR DESIGNERS) from a good, reputable breeder! Also, “breeders that breed mutts are usually only in it for the money! They make a cute little puppy that everyone loves and sell it like it is the top of the line show dog! There is the fact that no reputable breeder breeds mutts (designers-Example: Golden doodles) and NO HEALTH TESTING is being done!!!!!!
DO NOT EVER EVER get a pet from a pet store! Most pet stores buy animals from PUPPY MILLS!!! Do you know what a puppy mill is? If you don’t, look it up and I am sure you will understand why you do not want to be giving them more money by buying a pup to “breed more dogs!
~STEP 3: PREPARING TO GET A DOG
Also, if you are not an experienced dog trainer, here are VERY helpful websites that will help you train your dog properly!
<a href="http://www.dog-obedience-training-review.com/">http://www.dog-obedience-training-review.com/</a>
<a href="http://leerburg.com/">http://leerburg.com/</a>
For the second link, look at some of his ebooks. They are so helpful!!
Also, enrolling your dog in obedience classes will help tremendously. It is a learning experience for both you AND the dog!!! Watching “It’s Me or the Dog on Animal Planet really helps with dog training.
: D Supplies:
-Water and Food Bowls
-Leashes
-Collar
-Dog Food
-Local Vet CHOSEN!

~STEP 4: BRINGING HOME DOGGIE!
PUPPY: <a href="http://www.raisingspot.com/intro_bringing_puppy_home.php">http://www.raisingspot.com/intro_bringing_puppy_home.php</a>
ADULT DOG: <a href="http://www.paw-rescue.org/dog_guide.php">http://www.paw-rescue.org/dog_guide.php</a>
~STEP 5: RAISING A GOOD DOG!
You need to give your dog a lot of things, but one of the most important things is going to the vet!
<a href="http://www.1800petmeds.com/">http://www.1800petmeds.com/</a> -(1-800-PETMEDS) go to this site (or call) where you can buy pet medicine for a cheap price! WARNING: ONLY buy medicine your vet suggests from this site!!!
~The key thing in raising a dog that will respect you is good, stern training that starts when the dog is a pup! Respect the dog, and the dog will respect you! You may give your dog food and love, and he may like you, but he very well may not respect you! You have to earn it! Dogs need a lot of attention, love, and training. Do all of these things, and |

I have owned Weims for 12 years now.
They are very very smart.
They will get into things if the opportunity presents itself.
They get bored easily.
They are very very active. Lots of run time is best with these dogs.
They do not do well in kennels or outside away from family.
They are independent thinkers and look for ways to amuse themselves if you are not providing something for them to do.
They need firm consistent rules and you need to be able to back them up. Set the rules and stick to them. If you bend once you will do it forever. They are smart and they remember things.
I have child proof latches on some cabinets. There are no kids in my home but I have dogs who will open the treat or food cabinets. Trash needs to be locked up.
They are food motivated and will do almost anything to get to food.
Look at a couple of breeders or talk to someone who works with one of the rescues and tell them about your lifestyle and see how they think the dog will fit in.
They are great dogs in the right home. |

The one I am close to is like a kitten in bears clothes.
His size is intimidating at first but is really a very friendly dog. He does have a nasty bark that is useful for "solicitors" and jehovah's lol
This particular dog requires a ton of attention and affection from its owner.
If you like a 100 pound muscular dog sleeping on your lap then yes get one. |

You're basically saying you will exercise the dog, love it, and train it. Any breed over 30lb would probably suit you fine. |

I think that a Weimaraner would suit you well. You sound like a person that will fit their needs. They are loving family pets, good with children. |
