I will soon be getting a seven month old Weimaraner. He's housetrained, but honestly he hasn't had much training beyond this. Driver is strong as a bull, will weight 85 lbs at adulthood, and I need some help with teaching a huge, wild puppy his manners.

Also, how often will he need to be brushed/bathed, and what tools should I use for a smooth Weim coat?

Links and the like are appreciated.

Here is the most simple and effective way to curb jumping, pawing and other such behaviors:
<a href="http://www.mastiffonlinecommunity.net/viewtopic.php?t=6789">http://www.mastiffonlinecommunity.net/viewtopic.php?t=6789</a>
You can believe it works. Many of the members of that online community utilize the method, and we have mastiffs. By seven months of age, a Mastiff can easily weigh 120 pounds, and they mature extremely slowly. Basically, we end up with 180-pound puppies, so it's very important that we have effective methods of treating bad behaviors.

Here's how to teach him how to walk politely on the leash:

If he's wild in his greetings:

How to teach him self control:

Grooming a Weim is very simple. You should brush him at least twice a month two remove dead hair and other debris. Use a natural bristle brush like this one:
<a href="http://www.petco.com/product/100149/Finishing-Touch-Natural-Bristle-Brush-for-Dogs.aspx">http://www.petco.com/product/100149/Finishing-Touch-Natural-Bristle-Brush-for-Dogs.aspx</a>
You really only need to bathe him when he gets very stinky or dirty. About four times a year is good. You can use any good shampoo. I personally like the earthbath line, but that's just preference. If you want to go above and beyond, you can spritz him with fur conditioner and a hound glove after you've bathed him for an extra shiny, supple coat. (A hound glove is just a sort of rubber glove with tons of little rubber bristles on it.) You can find all these tools at any pet store.

go straight to www.leerburg.com there are a heap of free training articles and a forum.

he should only need to be bathed as often as he is dirty and something like a Kong rubber brush is great, or a grooming mit. DO not use slicker brushes on weimeraners it tears the skin and splits the hairs.

Dont forget as soon as you bring him home keep him on leash, give him a routine and lay down the rules from the moment he comes onto your property. I know its tempting to let them rush around and sniff everything out, do what they want for a while but no no no... you need to teach him from that moment what you want and what you dont want. It will make your life easier and remember - if in doubt keep him on a leash!

I recommend getting into an obiedence class. I will leave you with an excellent website but getting the hands on training and be able to work with a person will benefit you much more than just a site.

Bathing, for most dogs you don't want to bath them more than once a month. Too much and you will strip them of their natural oils and cause them to get dry skin.

For a smooth coat i would go with a rubber brush or a bristle brush.
