You’re so lucky, they're great dogs!
Weimaraners take up to a year and sometimes just over to fully grown and fatten up. Although age of maturity is longer at around 2-3 years.
Firstly start with sit, down, stay and come. They're the most important commands the dog must learn. Then you can progress to things like paw and roll over.
My dogs have two Weimaraners friends, Oscar and Dexter. I also like Ghost and Casper for Weimaraners.
Yes they are natural swimmers but some Weims aren't big fans, so I would introduce the dog to water as soon as you can, my Springer started swimming at 3 months, it's young but essential, during the socialisation period. Start with a paddling pool and then get him used to lakes and rivers, possibly going in with him, praising him or encouraging him with treats or a toy.
As long as your dog receives at least 2 hours exercise a day with a chance to run of lead, and for you including swimming, he will be fine without a large garden. I'm glad you are wanting him to be a swimmer as there are not enough people who encourage their dogs to swim even though it is one of the best ways to tire them out.
I would invest in a fence as Weimaraners, being hunting dogs, could quite possibly wander off.
Weimaraners adapt well to all climates, but during the winter you could invest in a dog jacket or keep him active with lots of running around, ball chasing and generally playing with him. Although I think he will be ok.
I think you will be fine and there is no need to be nervous, you should be excited! I would highly recommend training classes though as he will be your first dog and they can give you lots of advice on caring for your puppy. Also with a breed like a Weimaraners they're essential.
Good luck with your new dog, you'll have fun with him. They're amazing lovely and loyal dogs |
