Now before you jump to conclusions, I've thought about this alot and just want some other opinions. My husband and I have a 9 month old weimaraner who is very close to both of us. I'm worried that she will get extremely jealous of the baby when it gets here and I really don't want to have to get rid of her. I'm thinking that if we get a puppy, she'll have someone to play with and won't be so jealous of most of our time being taken up. With that being said, our friends owe us a puppy (we watched 6 of their dogs while they were on vacation for 2 weeks) and they just had a litter of puppies and they happen to be the parents that we want. They won't be ready for another 6 weeks or so and then we can bring the puppy home and start training her. With Anna (our dog), she was trained within 2 weeks of bringing her home. She was completely housebroken, could sit, lay down, shake, high-five and rollover by 9 weeks. I know all dogs are different, but weimaraners are extremely smart dogs and my husband and I are pretty confident that we can do it again. My question is, the puppy will only be about 3 months old when the baby gets here.. What do you think??? We are thinking about the baby and our dog here. Anna is part of our family and we want the baby to grow up with her. Just a little nervous and I know that we could always give the dog back if things go wrong.. What are ya'lls opinions on the matter? |

Personally I wouldn't do it. Bringing a puppy home is stressful.... even if your first dog was a breeze and only took two weeks. If you think about it, I bet it was a long and tiring two weeks. There is nothing to say this dog won't take longer... or that the two dogs will even get along. You will not just be training one dog but two this time.
It just seems like you are going to put even more stress on Anna and yourselves. You will essentially be turning her world upside down and make her get use to a new dog and then three months later do it again when you bring the baby home.
Yes you run the risk that Anna may have a hard time adjusting to the baby, but she might also be perfectly fine with it. I'd hold off. Its not like you can't get a new puppy after you are a little more settled with the baby. Tackle one new life at a time! |

I thimk is a good idea the younger the pup is the easier it will get used to your newborn child and besides if your husband works you wont get bored while waiting for your baby,a big NO to cats cat litter is dangerous for both of you good luck! |

i would get the pup for a companion for your other dog hun their is no harm in it.at all i have a cat that has been in my home 7 years and just got him a companion yesterday due to our new baby that will be here late may or early june, the only thing is you just have to watch and see how they react with baby usualy dog's and cat's are really good when it come's to newborns they tend to check on them and not be so jelious!
also to add when i had my first son in Feb 08 and brought him home my cat checked on him and such and just left him alone, both the cat's are protective of him already! |

I think if you get and train and can afford the puppy before the baby gets here, I would go for it. I have 2 cats and though they are a lot less work, it helped that we got a second becuase it did keep the other who was my baby before my son got here. Good Luck. I want a puppy NOW but there is no way I could train him/her with a baby. |

i'm sorry...i started reading, but then i saw the last line "I know that we could always give the dog back if things go wrong.." as soon as i saw that, i didn't even bother reading the whole thing...how do u consider a dog to be a part of the family if u're ready to give a dog away, i'm guessing u're talking bout the new puppy...but would u give ur own baby away if something is going wrong? if u're gonna treat a dog as a part of ur family, then there is no "we'll give it back if something", it's like ur own child! just bc of that, i don't think u're ready for another dog!
EDIT: then u shouldn't get a puppy if u're ready to give it back. an animal has feelings too. my family have been getting animals from animal shelters our whole lives, and it's people like u who take the puppy, then bring it back, r the ones who put the animals through so much stress that by the time we pick them up, they don't trust anyone bc they're afraid we'll just take them back just like everyone else does. |

I don't think it's a good idea, dogs mentality is that they have a place in there pack. With a new baby arriving and a new puppy to share the house with it might cause her to be confused about her place in the pack. Not to mention that being pregnant is hard enough, and adding a new puppy to that mix only intensifies your duties. Not all dogs are the same, you may have just had great luck with Anna. |

I don't think it's a bad idea! I'm 28 weeks and we just bought a puppy for my 3 year old. I didn't want her to feel left out when her new brother gets here. Our puppy is 12 weeks so she'll be a little older when the baby gets here. If you're willing to take the time and effort with a new puppy (it's gonna be hard once the baby is here) I think it's a good idea! |

I think it's a personal choice, but it depends on the dog and it's nature.
When my mum was expecting me she had a labrador puppy and he was so protective of me, and loving. It was a great idea, I grew up with him. He was the same age as me and was fantastic.
I want a puppy for when my baby is due so they can grow up with their own dog, I think it's just something that's a great idea for children.
I'd say go for it, if the puppy is young enough to be trained, she/he will easily get used to having a baby taking some of the attention. I think the trick is to let them bond the way two dogs or two kids would bond.
Good luck |

I understand how you feel i am ttc and i am scared that my cat hes (5 years old ) and very spoiled i am scared that he will be jealous when we have a baby, they told me that he can ether be very jealous or very protective with the baby, that might happen to ur dog. but i love animals so if u think he will get along with a puppy then go for it and Congratulations.. |
