My new Weim (10 mo old intact male) just came to my house yesterday. His old owner assured me he wasn't clingy or didnt have separation anxiety. Last night he was ok downstairs when I was up. But the minute I went in my bed to go to sleep, he began scratching at my door and crying. I took him out to pee and he still did it. Finally he went in my son's bedroom, which I told him is off limits.
His owner told these tales of how obedience trained he is. But I have not seen it. He is a sweet dog so far, BUT he seems to be trying to challenge my authority as his "pack leader" |

He may have been obedience trained and well behaved with them, but YOU are NOT them. THEY worked with the dog and he learned the limits with them. He has not established any sort of bond with you yet, nor has anything been repeated enough for hims to understand "Hey, i shouldn't do this."
What did you expect, that he would be "the perfect dog" from day one? Of course he's going to try to challenge you. Of course he's going to test the waters. So what you need to do is set limits NOW and enforce them: if he isn't allowed on the furniture, then don't allow him on the furniture. I would also start doing basic obedience work with him - that along with daily controlled walks will help him form a bond with YOU.
Google NILF, that may also help.
PS - By "Telling him" i hope you mean that you told your son that the dog is not allowed in his room... because "telling" a dog that a room is off limits won't mean a thing to that dog. They don't understand english. If you don't want him somewhere, then block the room off with a baby gate OR shut the door. |

First off just because he was well behaved for the other owner does not mean he will be that for you.
He is going to test the limits boundries and find out what he can and can not get away with.
Neuter him. Trust me it helps.
Get a crate and that is where he will sleep.
Set the rules then STICK to them. He is going to challange you as he does not know you or your rules.
Weims can be very tough dogs. Most have seperation issues and they all love to be with their owners. I have owned the breed for 12 years. |

Did he sleep alone with his last owner? If not he may be lonely. Remember he is still a young dog and has Just been separated from his pack so he needs to figure out the new territory. Remember dogs are pack animals and rely on the pack to survive so he may be uncomfortable being alone at night. |

First, neuter him.
Second, crate train him (if he's not already). He may have been whining and wanting to be in someone's room simply because he didn't have a den of his own.
Third, give it time. It was his first day in a brand new home without the owner he had been with his whole life. |

He's 10 mos old and it's his first night. 'Nuff said.
How did the old owner know he didn't have separation anxiety if he'd never been separated before????????? |

doggies want to sleep with their owners. we tried that caging thing for a few nights, did not work. i put her bed in the floor beside ours. that worked until she figured out how to get on the bed. (it is really high and she cant jump it, BUT she figured out that she could jump on the trunk at the end, then to the bed) it was all over after that, she is always in the bed now. i feel weird without her now. be patient, all the kinks will work themselves out soon. new pups are hard work, but it is ALL worth it in the end when they are your bestestestestesstetteset friend. |
