we are a family of four. our kids are in late teens and we want a dog. We can't decide which one. I know that weimaraner are energetic and need alot of exercise. We know that Rottweiler can be territorial and aggressive if not train properly. We have a medium size yard and have time to take the dog out and about. We havent had a dog in a while. Any help would be great

Having had both breeds in the past and present I can say from my experience that our Weim were far easier to train and while our Rottie was a visual deterrent our Weim is a far better watch dog. Weims, by there nature are people dogs. They are known as the "velcro breed" for their extreme devotion to their family; they WILL follow you from room to room, every time. This drives some weimaraners to suffer from separation anxiety. They are not a breed that will do well with being left outside alone for long periods of time ( I know you said you have time to take the dog out and about; this is a necessity for a Weim) Crate training is a must for your sakes as well as theirs as they can get destructive if not kept busy. It's not recommended that use an "invisible fence" for them; as negative re-enforcement will only create fear with them. They are uber-intelligent, protective but unaggressive in nature (though they have an alarming bark). For their sake and yours please, please familiarize yourself with the genetic issues inherent with this breed (not that they all suffer from them) as we get many rescues surrendered to us for this reason alone. Please chose your breeder carefully as this will go a long, long way to saving your wallet and heart. Please consider rescuing regardless of the breed you choose.

Thanks,

Weimaraner-

if you train at an early age he can be a great guard dog. Awsome grace, speed, strength, and stamina. Easy to train. Good with children. Indoor dog. Loves heat, hates cold. Not too much grooming needed. live 12-13 years. grow around 27 in. and weigh around 86 lbs.

Rotties- Powerfull Body and jaws. Great protection. (Handsome) Easy to train, and will show temper UNLESS you train at an early age with love and no hitting. But the temper trait has been reduced. Indoor dog. Not too much grooming needed. Not too good with other dogs (sometimes). needs excersize. Live 11-12 years. Grow up to 27 inches and weigh up to 110 lbs.

Both are amazing dogs. But I do think rotties need a home more than Weimaraners.

Rottweilers all are different, it depends on how there raised, same with Weimaraners though, anyway if you get a Rottweiler make sure it has a good temperment, I know a rott and hes the nicest dog ever, but be sure, they are VERY energetic.

If you are still looking at breeds that are that different, then you are not ready to choose a dog yet.

edit
The reference is that the Weimer is a sporting dog, and the Rottie is a guard/farm dog. So first decide if you want a dog from the sporting group or one from the working group. Then narrow your search within that specific group.
There are several breeds to choose from that are very similar to the Weimer and also several that are like the Rottie. But, the two breeds are as different as night and day.
