I love dogs. more than dogs in general, i love hunting dogs. (pure-bred)
i want a pack of dogs and have already chosen most of my pack.
I like to hunt upland game birds, water fowl, coon, rabbit, squirrel, bear, boar, and deer.
As you can tell I am an all around hunter.
I have already chosen for my pack:
a black and tan coon hound
a blue tick coon hound
a treeing walker coon hound
and a red bone coon hound
for my pointers:
an irish setter
a german short haired pointer
and a weimaraner
if you know anything about all of these breeds then you must know that I, "an all-around hunter," need an all around pack of dogs.
I just need one breed. of these two breeds which would you choose to add to your pack of purebred all-around hunting dogs?
the brittany pointer:
the world's smallest and fastest pointer
devoted
He is used primarily on upland game in the United States, but is used on both fur and feather in France.
exceptionally keen nose
versatile breed
The Brit does exactly the same job as the G.S.P., G.W.P., Viszla, Munsterlander, Weimaraner, Spinone etc - except FASTER!
Gentle and affectionate yet full of life and exuberance.
very easy to train
obedient
outstanding instinct for retrieving from water
This breed is resistant to cold and damp conditions.
free thinker
the magyar vizsla: (hungarian pointer)
above-average ability to take training
excellent nose
natural hunter
well developed protective instinct
"nick named the velcro dog"
so would you choose a brittany or a vizsla? |

I would forget them both. If you have the dogs you suggest you have, you have MORE than enough of a "pack" to hunt everything found on the North American continent. I'd also drop the Irish Setter because it has been bred away from the field and into the show arena. They are only now beginning to make a comeback. The weimeraner is just another version of the German shorthair which I prefer from experience. The hound choices are fine, but you might want a catch dog in the group if you plan on using them for boar. For that, many of the guides use mixed breeds with some boxer, pit bull, Rhodesian ridgeback, dingo, etc. in varying proportions. And for heavy duty waterfowling where the big Canada geese are involved, you ought to consider a Labrador retriever. |

Neither - get a retriever, chocolate labs are nice. You have enough trackers and up-rooters, need one to bring 'em home. |

Neither of these is an all around hunting dog. A brit will not be a decent waterfowl retriever and cannot tolerate extreme temps, like icy water, for long. It sounds like your description of of the brit comes right from a brit lover's website. Don't believe everything you read. They are hyper and hard-headed. Good luck getting them to run coons or bear. That would be funny to watch....if you could even get it to happen.
I don't know much about the vizsla, but having never seen one, I can imagine it is not very popular. And certain hunting breeds are popular for obvious reasons.
You should get a lab to handle most of your hunting situation. As for coon hunting, you are going to have to get a hound. |

VIZSLA!!!! Sadly, there aren't as many people as you'd think that know about this breed, but they are absolutely incredible. I used to breed, raise, and train full blooded vizslas, and what you can do with these dogs is amazing. I have used them for squirrel and coon hunting, duck hunting (as long as it's not too cold), running deer, and just being a good all - around dog. The only one I've got left is a little one... not near full grown... named him Jake. |
